Firewire or soundcard

I am just getting into digital recording, have been using an old Tascam 424. So far, I have been considering 2 possible routes (cause they have seemed to be the best 2 i was exposed to.)

Option 1: I was going to purchase the M-Audio Delta 1010 Soundcard and the Octane Preamp since both had 8-10 In/Outs and 8 preamps

but then I wa hearing a lot of people buying...

Option 2: The Presonus Firepod which also has the 8 preamps, but uses fire wire instead of sound card.

Which is a "better" way to go, firewire or thru a sound card? What do you all think about my 2 choices, i'd appreciate any suggestions on ways to go.

i could be wrong on my definitions but

the firewire option is still a soundcard. the difference is that the delta 1010 is a PCI soundcard and the firepod is a firewire soundcard. Both of your options sound pretty decent. I think i would go the firepod route just because i think it would be cheapter and it's a slicker setup. Firewire is pretty awsome in that you don't have to take your computer apart to install it.

Yes it is pretty awesome, and I plan on going this route myself. But if you don't have any firewire ports on your computer than you do need to open it up to install the ports. Check your hardware.

i will be building a computer based on what components/software i decide to go with, so I can do whatever.

are you sure that you are going to need 8 preamps right away? if so then the firepod is probably a good way to go. If you do decide to go the PCI route, i would suggest an echo layla 3G and an octane insted of the delta 1010. with the layla, you get 2 preamps built in, then you can use ADAT to connect the 8 channel octane. with this setup you have 10 preamps and 6 more available inputs should you need them. check em out at www.echoaudio.com

Cool, so what is ADAT, I've seen taht but haven't researched it yet? I also see ADAT lightpipe?

The reason I was wanting 8 preamps was for possibly micing a drum kit. By getting the 8 preamps with the Firepod, are you not getting as good of preamps or why would you not get on that has that many Ins with preamps?

What is ADAT

ADAT is an Alesis recording technology which uses the equivalent of SVHS tapes to record 8 channels of audio...similar to the smaller TASCAM tape format. They have an interface which allows audio to travel over an optical cable (specifically fiber optic) which transfers 8 channels of audio digitally over the ADAT "Lightpipe" interface. This is in place of using 8 seperate guitar patch style cables to get audio to your audio interface/mixer. By using an audio interface with the "Lightpipe" interface you can get a preamp with 8 channels into your computer through this single very small but efficent cable with virtually no signal loss. So instead of {8 cables} - {Preamp} - {8 cables} - {computers audio interface} it is {8 cables} - {preamp} - {1 optical} - {computers audio interface}

ok...hope that is helpful and accurate!!
Those more in the know please correct as necessary!!

The firepod's the way to go.
Rackmount, just plug it in, everything you need in one unit.
Then just plug it into your laptop when you want to do some recording round at your mate's place

Motu?

Have you looked at the Motu cards? It's a little more expensive but you get a quality audio interface. I think it's worth checking into. Does anyone here have any comments on the Motu 828K interface? I am in the market for a new set up too but right now I don't have a firewire port on my PC so I was thinking about going PCI. I've been running a AMD 1.4 PIII with a Delta 66 since early 2002 and I am looking to upgrade to a card with better sound quality.
