firewire drive w/ protools problem

I'm asking this question for a freind of mine.

He bought a 120gig firewire drive and tracked 14 songs using protools 5.1. He recorded 24/48. Now he wants to mix/master the songs at his studio(5.1 protools also) but his system won't access the firewire drive. So he bought an 80gig digi HD(much more expensive) and transffered the files but he still can't access them on his protools system because they are 24/48, and he says he needs them to be 24/44.1.

How can he get the firewire drive, or the digi drive to work on his system? His next step was going to be either to go to another studio and mix the songs, or go to another studio and convert the files to 24/44.1.

Please let me know of any suggestions or other info I need to get from him so this post makes more sense. He is really feeling screwed right about now, so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

If he can open the session on his own computer, he could try file>save session copy in...
This way he can save the whole session, audio files and all, into a new folder.
In the dialog box, chose "44.1" for the sample rate, and make sure to check the "all audio files" box under "items to copy".

Hope this helps.

Oops. I didn't read carefully enough. He can't open the session on his own computer.
Why does he think the session needs to be 24/44.1? Even ProTools LE is supposed to read 24/48.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know why he can't do them as 24/48, but I told him about how on my pc I can run files through a batch processor to convert alot of files at once, and he can see the files on his comp so he has been taking each file individually and re-saving them at 24/44.1. I will suggest what you said in your 1st post fprod south. Thanks.

You need to give us a lot more information. It sounds to me like there are two possibilities: he has had some sort of catastrophic crash or hardware error at his studio, because there is no situation in which Pro Tools LE cannot read 24/48 sessions, when it's working properly. Also, not being able to access the firewire drive indicates there is some other sort of hardware problem.

Could I go out on a limb here and say he is trying to go from Mac to PC or PC to Mac? Macs and PCs will not recognize the same drives, once they are formatted for one OS they will not be recognized by another, and even if they are, they will not be reliable for audio session playback.

P.S. By the way, saving each individual audio file into a different audio format is a waste of time, and it will not work. The Pro Tools session is set up to look for certain files at certain specific wordlengths and sample rates. Altering the audio files will make them unavailable to the session, and you will never be able to get them back in, at least, not without a bunch of nasty conversion, and even then, you will have to manually place each audio file in the right spot. As I said before, there is no reason that Pro Tools LE should not be able to read a 24/48 session, and it would probably be a good idea for him to call support if this is actually the problem.
