i am using just my computer speakers...but i love the ways these sound. I was iffy about getting the firepod..but i think you made my mind up. What kind of drums are you using?

Obviously I can't tell how they would sound in a dense mix, but as they are I think they sound great. I particularly like the kick sound..

Everything sounds really cool in the reference mix EXCEPT the kick/bass drum: it sounds like someone punching a side of pork (Scott Walker).

Cheers man.
Its a Pearl Export kit. 5 toms and nice big beefy kick drum.
The snare is a Pearl Brass Snare but not sure what model.
The drums could do with some proper tuning to get a more pro sound I think, but we ain't the best at tuning. :(

Rayc, not sure how you hear the kick in that way. It has a nice meaty low end. It does sound a bit too high end slappy on some of the kicks, but when we come to recording the drums properly we will be tuning the drums and also using better and more mics and also we will replace any of the bad hits with better hits.
I think its acceptable demo grade drums for now.

How close is the drum kit to the wall?
The drum kit is set up with 3 walls around it, the space between the walls is maybe twice the size of the drum kit.
Can you hear unwanted reflections?

There are some pretty serious phase issues going on in that mix, but I am sure you are aware of that. They are probably coming from the walls you put up. What are the walls made of? Do you have a pic?

The walls are part of the room and made out of bricks painted over.
I hear a phasey sound on the snare, is that what you were hearing?

Bricks.....not a good idea. No absorption, and low transmission of sound through the wall. All sound goes right back into the room.

When it comes to recording properly we will bring the drums out of the small enclosed space into the main part of the room.
Unfortunately the whole room is made of bricks.

Will this cause phasing even if the walls are a lot further away from the drums?
The width of the room is about 4 drum kits with 5 toms width.
The room has a wooden floor which I feel will be nice for the recording of the drums.

Bricks are no problem at all. In fact, they are great for drums.

However, the size of the room may be a problem. What are all the dimensions?

As far as the phase issues, I was referring to the overall cymbal/room sound. They sound like they were close to a wall due to the phasing and comb filtering. In the bigger room can you get them a few feet out from the wall at least?

The snare sounds a like it is in a boxy room. But I can hear the kick drum well and I am on small computer speakers. For the most part is sound pretty decent if you can fix the snare sound, Maybe throw a gate and a little room verb on it.

I think the kick sounds great, but out of context. The snare isn't so good and the mix is really narrow on my speakers. I've got pretty good imaging and it seems like the acoustic is too centered. I know this is a demo recording and it's pretty good, but you've gotta do something about the snare and the overheads. They're box city.

My best wishes!

Yeah we should have about 5-6 feet either side of 2 walls and maybe 10-15 feet each side of the other 2 walls.

Thanks man.
I quite like the snare aprt from the strange sound I can hear which I could say was boxy like you said. The OHs were put up very fast with no attention to stereo spread so to get the kicn and snare centred in the OHs mix I had to pan them quite narrow and also so that one was panned more to one side than the other so they sounded balanced. That alone could cause some not to nice phasing.

Eck

So, about 18X32 approx? Did I add right? How high are the ceilings?

Get the kit out away from the walls, and make sure the center of your snare is the EXACT same distance to both OH's, and that they sound good (the OH's).

Could be that size roughly yeah. Nice size room.
Yeah we plan to definitely bring the kit out in to the main room, but its too much hassle for just demo recordings as that means setting up the drums and mics each night we go in.
Our studio is in an art studio where folk come to paint, so we dont have constant use of the main part of the room. We only get a few hours each night to record which is a shame.

Cheers,
Ill post a proper recording once we are ready for it.

Eck

How high are the ceilings?
Quite low.
The roof is pretty dang high, over 10 feet anyway, but there are polystirine panels as the ceiling at about 8 foot high.

What do you think of the ceiling?
