To answer a couple of questions...
I still haven't posted any remixes of this until Lt. Bob gets back from vacation. He tells me he has some horn section ideas so my mouth is kinda watering!
First off, participant, there is no delay on the mix you have. (My current mix has a thickening aux delay on the vocal tracks that I'm still undecided on.) But I can understand where you might be hearing this. I'll do a quick break down of tracks for ya...
Acoustic gits/ clean electric: 3 layered performances, 4 tracks. Each acoustic performance was recorded (in a temperature of 97 degrees...still gotta wash that sweat off!) with a Bheringer B2 at the 12th fret and an SM58 as an "overhead".
Acoustic performance #1: B2- 63% left. SM58- 82% left.
Acoustic performance #2: B2- 61% right. SM58- 73% right
Paul Reed Smith: SM57- 47% left.
Why? Because it sounded right to me.
Electric (heavier) gits: Double performance on a Les Paul/ Marshall miked with SM57.
Performance #1: 80% left
Performance #2: 76% right
Vocals: Bheringer B2...Nothing special here really. Single tracks with some reverb added. Lead is 9% left. Harmonies at 37% right. There are some additional harmonies at the end that are spread out more to make room for those heavy gits.
Bass: Korg Triton "Stein Bass" recorded in stereo but panned slightly to the left. I'm really looking forward to getting a real bass though. Much more fun to play
Drums: As with all of my shit, each note is individually composed with a midi mapper, and sent to the Korg for playback, and each part (snare, kick, etc.) is tracked separately. I am a control freak.
Midi drums are great for apartment recording, IMO. When I move into a house (October) I'm going to seek out a good drummer.
Hope this helps some, Chad. Feel free to PM me if you've got anymore Q's. God knows you've helped me a lot.
WATYF- "Rhythms" was recorded a couple months ago before I was self-diagnosed with Gear Aquisition Syndrome. I recorded 2 layered performances (mono) of the acoustic with an SM58 about a foot from the sound hole, and most of the picking with center of the hole for warmth. 62% R and 69% L. Nothing magic there really. No effects other than reverb and I still don't have a compressor, so really no "chain" to speak of. (A few minutes ago I ordered a RNC compressor and a couple of VTB-1 pre's....which amounts to lots of overtime at work!)
Once again, I totally believe we should all be asking these sorts of questions when we hear something in this clinic. If the sound is good, we might learn from it. If the sound is bad, we may help someone by knowing how it was recorded/ mixed.
Anyway, I apologize to everyone else for the bump, but I wanted to answer those Q's for you guys. I'm open to suggestions on improving if you see (or hear) a flaw that's bugging you.
