i finally got my album done, LOGIKRHYMEREZON, it was almost a 2 year project that I started working on with some local musicians in Philly. REALLY need some support, if you'd be kind enough to check out the site --- and maybe even get a CD ;) --- it'd be the greatest help. THANX!

The site has the good looks that flash seems to lend to almost all pages. It's sharp, and the content is fairly thorough. It's mostly just text, and the text doesn't have a very aesthetic layout, but it serves its purpose.

I do like the availability of the music in the top right corner. I think it would be better if you had a drop down menu of some sort, so that people could select a song directly rather than scroll through tracks one by one.

Also, I would MUCH rather be able to hear two or three complete songs than only pieces of many. I know this is a highly debated marketing tactic, but I think it's always better to give people something for free that they can take with them and enjoy. I know from experience that if you offer a complete song, people will download it, burn it, listen to it in their cars, at parties, distribute it to their friends...45 seconds of a song is useless beyond their direct interaction with it on the website. They might like it, and some may even decide to buy your album based on it, but no one is going to spread the word because of it.

Good point.

In fact, a few times, I've been able to download 4-5 entire songs of a 10-song LP and was hooked so much that I went out and bought the album.

Maybe give 2-3 full songs and clips of the rest?

Agree / disagree ?

I wonder....... I understand the theory of the complete song burn but what would happen if its #1 quality? Outside of the promotion that is?
I felt this might be good food for thought.
Course if you have a full copyright on it there's no worry, right?

Checked out your site.
May try to make your gig in Dallas or OK City.

Are you bringing up a concern of people ripping off your work or of people not wanting to buy the album if they feel that they've already heard the best it has to offer?

With respect to the first issue, I think musicians with any intent to market their work should file a copyright. It's only $30 for an album, well worth it to escape any potential plagiary or other hassle in the future. With respect to the second issue, national acts routinely release albums with only 1 or 2 decent songs to offer. People still buy the album because those songs are the only ones that get any airplay.

I certainly don't advocate making an album full of shite. I'm just making the point that people pay for what they perceive they're getting as much as they do for what they are getting in reality.

Definitely come check us out. It's a good show.

Hell, I've had CDRs burned and given to me and I've liked 'em so much I bought a retail copy just to support the band.

My band BLACKFALL and I are debating the same issue as I type this. We have a 4 song CD that we just released and we dont want to give it away so we thought we'd try to give away a sample of our music on mini cd. We are debating whether to put 45sec samples of 5-6 songs of ours or one whole song that says exactly what we are about.

We came to a compromise and will do a full song, BUT we are adding a personal introduction by the singer while the music is playing and then let the song go for a minute or so then pull down the volume a bit on the tune and add another little plug for our website and then another at the very end. This is for PROMO purposes only. Basically for people we meet on the street that have no idea what we are about. This is our solution. what do you guys think???

check us out at: www.blackfall.com thanks! the dude~

Well, I've heard another promo CD done this way and it did add kind of a personal touch (groovyjudy.com).

I can see where some might argue that it adds a "cheese" factor, though.

yeah we thought of that but one dude in the band received a Guns and Roses sampler that was like this and there are websites where the bands members welcome you in and all that shit. Again, this is for people who have never heard of you and have only met you in the street. this IS a personal touch and if they dig the tunes, then they will also know we dont have our heads up our asses. later

If it's done well, I could see it being very useful.

Remember to mention your website and booking info at the very end.

Also, maybe you could burn some of them to those business-card type CDRs and snail-mail them out to people. These play like a 3" mini CD in most CD players (the tray kind anyway).

No, just some one out there wanting to copy and resell it before I get the chance to distribute it., Yes, I guess, maybe the ripping off in that way but thats what pyrates are about.

I agree with you on this one!!!

Definitely come check us out. It's a good show.

I'm planning on it. Just have to get it worked into my schedule. I looked at your tour dates. Looks like I have 3 possible choices.

This is why I think HR.com is such a great place. I never thought of doing this. I'll be editing some CD's tonight!!!

Took your ADVICE

first of all, didn't even realize this thread got some response, I figured no one cared after the first 2 weeks...

After alot of consideration, i took the decision to post 3 FULL songs online, in the Gallery section. First of all...my stuff is copyrighted, so that wasn't an issue. Second, I'm nobody right now, i really don't have the right to expect people to come to my site and buy a CD without giving them anything in return. Leavings, you had a good point, it's not worth putting a 45 second clip, i think it just pisses people off more than anything else. if i was gettin any radio play, maybe i could get away with it, but not at this point in the game

well, needless to say, thanx. if you could take 2 minutes of your time and check out the Gallery section, i'd really appreciate it. thanx for the support.

late...

Zip is a pretty unusual format to distribute music. Anything that requires more time than it takes to click on a link is going to get less attention. You want the music to be as accessible as it can be. People will be reluctant to listen if they have to first download and install WinZip. I really like the format you have on the top bar, I just think you should replace the clips with full songs.

On my site I offer people a choice between streaming audio and downloadable mp3's. I also generally specify how big the audio file is so downloaders know what they're getting into.

Our tour has two stops in Philly this spring, if you come out maybe we can trade CD's? Here are the dates:

may 4, 2004 -- philadelphia, pa » barnes & noble/ u-penn, 12:30 pm, 3601 walnut st., 215.898.4900
may 5, 2004 -- philadelphia, pa » fergie's pub, 8 pm, 1214 sansom street, 215.928.8118

leavings, i'll be able to make it to the one at fergie's...i'd rather hit up UPenn, i'm closer to their, but i wont be in the area around 12:30. i think u'll like penn, its a great atmosphere, alot of people walkin around (my guess is you'll be playing by the coffee house/bookstore?)...late...

I've never been there, so I'm not sure where we'll be playing. Coffeehouse sounds likely though. Fergie's is a pretty good venue. It's small, and last year it was packed...I hope there's room for everyone this time. I look forward to meeting you.

Peace,
Peter
