Good point about the soundfonts, that would be a kick in the ass if I had to leave them behind. They have been a good friend in many ways.

I will check out the cards you suggest, but dam it there's always something that bumps the active nearfields of the top of the wish list.

The Beyer DT100's are good for isolation and tracking, but mixing is a pain in the ass. You know the deal, do six variations on a theme, burn to disk and see which one works best in the real world. Then hope to god you can remember what your settings where for that particular mix.

Alan.

If Dobbies a good boy, maybe Master will let Dobbie buy some monitors.
I aint figured out a cover story for the monitors yet, but I'm working on it. Wonder if I show Master some monitors with the same wood finish as the table, Mmmm Dobbie has a plan!!!

I wouldn't worry about Soundfonts. Just use the lovely Livesynth Pro DXi, and you're set! That's what I do now (after ditching the SB Live and Audigy...) :)

Can that thing do drums?
Can you put drum sounds to midi drum patterns?
Does it have any drum sounds (other than bloody techno)?

Anyway, you scared the shit out of me as soon as you mentioned the word "Synth". Mmmm synth = midi = rewire = mid ports = AHHHHHHHHHH.

I know, its a wonderful and powerful tool, but so is a gun and in the hands of an idiot..........well you know the rest.

Don't worry, it's just a Soundfont player in disguise as a DXi (as in DirectX Instrument, but you know that...). It'll play any soundfont playable with a Creative card (as far as I'm aware of).

And if that doesn't do it for you, VSampler can open Soundfonts aswell. You can even make your own (because as you know, Vienna doesen't work without a Soundblaster).

Sorry for jumpin like this...
Are you mixing in Cake? (u571)
If yes, how about 'Save As'? Save as "mix-1", "mix-2" ect.?

Sound Fonts & Soft Synths

You may have noticed that I frequently recommend VirtualSampler3 for playing SoundFonts and Giga instruments with CakeWalk. Well VS3 works extremely well as a standalone, but it doesn't want to know HS2002 (unless I'm doing something drastically wrong):( I believe it will work with SONAR though.

Maybe the fault lies with my system, I really don't know - but at the mo I'm spending more time fartarsing around with HS2002 & VS3 than I should. I may have to bite the bullet and get a copy of LiveSynth Pro to play my fave SFs (love those GoldDrums). I sure miss those Giga instruments.

Working with soft synths really is a breeze, the tutorial in the manual covers it well.

Oh yes, and my audiocard is a Terratec EWX 24/96. I'm very happy with it. Piss poor tech support though, most problems I sorted out by myself.

Gentlemen,

Start your engines!
Now your talking, it does soundfonts! yipee.
I see many hours ahead reading manual and messing around.

As for soundcards with better audio, I like the look of this.

What do you think?
In case the link dont work, the product in question is the M-Audio Quattro.
I like the idea of USB, and the external box..........plus, just had a thought, I can jack this thing to the laptop..........and take it with me on business. The laptop (just got a new one) is way more powerful than the desktop, dont you hate it when that happens.(P4 2gig, 512DDR, 40gigHD, firewire,burner....the whole nine yards)

Ok, I'm getting way to excited for this time in the morning (not even finished the first cup of coffee yet) gotta go, dont want to peak too soon, I got a class today.

Alan.
