File misplacement?

I recorded a band in Cubase, but after we had recorded I realised that I had recorded the snare to quitely, so I put the snare .WAV file into Cool Edit Pro and changed the gain using the Normalise function. I have done this before with tracks and never had a problem, but this time once the file had been saved I opened it back up in Cubase and all I heard from that track was a fuzzy distortion, almost like white noise.
I couldn't understand why it would do this,as I have done a very similar thing in the past - normalising .WAV files for burning to cd. I tried the same thing with another snare track from a different song that I had recorded too quietly, only this time in Wavelab (only the lite version I'm afraid ). I used the change gain function and it worked fine. I opened it back up in Cubase with no problems - the change gain had worked.
Where have I gone wrong? And more importantly, is there any way I can retrieve the lost snare track?

Unless you have changed the name or the location of the original snare file, Cubase should still "find" the updated file as if it were never changed. If you have done it this way, AFAIK, CEP uses destructive editing and makes changes to the file. After all, that's what you wanted it to do. Unless you made a backup, the old one is gone.

If you normalized, and changed the updated file's name, or saved it in an alternate location, then you will have the old one in its original place.

So, it depends on exactly how you did this. I'm just curious as to why you wouldn't simply open up the wave editor in Cubase and normalize your track there? That seems much easier, and perhaps much safer.

Is the file editor the window that opens when you double click a wave? I really don't have a clue! Sorry.

you don't even have to open the wave editor, just highlight the track and click on FUNCTIONS / AUDIO FUNCTIONS / NORMALIZE.......but read the manual too man....(if you've got one)
