I'm fairly uneducated when it comes to aspects of music like time (4/4, 6/4,etc.) or tempo (Beats per minute).
Does anyone know of a website that has some good tutorials or lessons on how this stuff works.

I want to understand measures and beats per minute but right now I just play by ear and am clueless about that stuff..

any help is appreciated...

Ahhhh, theory.

Too bad I didn't finish that music ed degree. :)

How about this?

Basic theory is really quite simple! You'll get it in no time. And being able to read music is one of the BEST skills that any musician can have.

Though, a good ear is probably equally as valuable. If not more so.

If you're really serious, why not pick up a new instrument and join a beginning band for adults? Lots of universities and communities have 'em. You can pick up a used Yamaha student trumpet, for instance, for under $150 in great shape.

I dunno. I wouldn't be half the rock musician I am today, if not for band and orchestra. That's the truth.

Here's a place to start, as far as tempos are concerned... Your normal walking pace (unless you're unusually brisk or sluggish :) ) is about 90bpm. And "The Stars and Stripes Forever" is performed at 120bpm (as are almost all marches).

Oh yeah.

And if you go to any music store, you can get a pocket electronic metronome for $10-15. Great tool for practice.

I have some newbie advice

Listen to other people's music closely and try to keep the beat with them.
