Figure-8 mic needed for MS micing

If you had a pair of mics already then wouldn't that defeat the purpose of M/S? Why not just do X/Y?

I've already done X/Y and spaced omni. I want to learn and try some new stereo micing techniques, like for instance M/S.

I was more curious about what would be the advantage to doing a complicated M/S setup with 3 mics over just doing a standard X/Y.

Is there any inherent advantage to M/S or is it just different?

First, you only need 2 mics for M/S (1 figure-8 and 1 cardiod). However, you can substitute the figure-8 mic with 2 cardiods. Thus ending up with 3 mics.

One advantage I see with M/S setup is that you can change the stereo width during mixdown. That's not possible with X/Y (you'll have to re-record it with changed X/Y angle).

And... I like to learn more and create new interesting sounds, so I just want to try M/S to hear how it sounds compared to X/Y and spaced omni. I also like microphones very much and I don't own any figure-8 (yet), so that gives me a reason for buying yet another new mic;-)

Someone will chime in with a "tech" responce..But basicly M/S technique allows for a nice stereio image and can be collaped in mono very nicely with minimal{if any} phase cancelation..I'm sure Harvey will set anything I've said wrong right..

Oops, maybe you actually can change the stereo width during mixdown with X/Y as well--using the PAN knobs... But I don't know if that's the same as changing the level on the SIDE channels with M/S???

mono compatability is the main advantage to MS, although you can't get as "wide" an image as with some other techniques.

Now, can anyone tell me the difference between the Beyer 130 and 160? They have the same list price, I think...($699).

m160..{hyper}cart.
m130..fig.8

I posted a link a few back of this on the m130

Thanks for the info, Don. Now, can anyone tell me how Beyer gets a hypercardioid pattern on the 160? Is it just the way the grill around the capsule is vented? I was under the impression that ribbon mics were, by definition, figure-of-8.

Sounds like a good guess to me..The m130 uses two ribbons..So it looks like you would be right on with that guess..I use a ML19 ribbon and its cart. also ..so my bet would be that the ribbon "lays" horizontal as opposed to vertical to acheive the patterns other than the trad. fig.8..And I would also bet that the ribbons in these other patterns are "shorter"..But its just a guess..I'm sure that Harvey could and will answer these when he sees it..I dont know how half the crap I use works ..I just know if it sounds/works well for the app.  :D
