Hi, I want a Fender bass but American Fenders are costly.

If I buy a Mexican bass then put after-market pick-ups in it, do you think it will work right?

I love the sound of the American Precision bass; should I spend the money right now or save for an American series bass? I'm only buying from ebay anyway.

Thanks.

I would start playing some Mexican Basses in stores. You can find a jem in these sometimes. My buddy found a Mexican Tele that is one of the nicest playing/sounding teles I have ever picked up. But many of the Mexican Fenders are marginal, so wait until you find a good one. If you keep saving your money while you look, and you don't find one, you might save up enough for a used American P-Bass.

I think buying used is the smart way to go anyhow, as long as you have a chance to play it, and know what to look for.

Simple...

Sit down.
Play the bass,...
Listen to the bass,...
Look at the finish of the bass.

If everything playes, sounds and looks to your expectations...
Buy it. ;)
