i have a fostex fd8 digital multitracker but primarily use the delta omni computer-based recording method. is there any way to use them in conjunction... possible get more tracks at once?

More tracks at once at which end? PC end or the FD8 end?

To get the best use of the FD8 with a pc, you really need an audio card with an ADAT connection.

see im limited by the 2 simultaneous track limitation on the delta omni and i thought maybe, through an A/D converter, there might be a way to get more tracks on the PC end. pretty much i made the switch to computer recording and am trying to find a use for this standalone unit.

ah, ok... Well, here's what I do. I track to my FD8 and then transfer everything to the PC for mixing and mastering. You could do the same with your Delta card, but you'd be transfering 2 tracks at a time. With an ADAT capable audio card, you can transfer 8 at a time. I also create drum tracks on the PC and send those to the FD8 so I can track to a drum track instead of the click track.

Question:

Can you use one FD-8, and using the virtual tracks, dump to computer, then end up with more than 8 tracks?

Yup. I do that a lot. I'll fill up my FD8, dump to PC, then fill up the FD8 again, dump to PC. The main thing to do to keep it all in sync is to to have the FD8 follow the PC using MTC.

Ok. Problem I have is this: I have NO IDEA of the BASIC equipment needed to do this. Can you recommend a program that would explain all the wires/hardware needed to pull it off? Thanks.

All you need is an ADAT optical capable audio card if you want transfer 8 tracks at a time. Other wise, you're stuck with 2 with a stereo audio card. And then you need a MIDI connection between the PC and the FD8. I use a soundblaster live for the midi connection. Then it's just a matter of hooking up the outs/ins, setting your slave/master settings, and you're in business.
