FD-8 Problems

This is an odd one. A friend just bought a used FD-8, so that he and I can send disks back and forth across the country. The unit has an IDE drive installed. When he hooks up a Zip 250 drive, the unit sometimes sees the IDE as it's main drive, sometimes the SCSI. That's the first issue. It's intermittent.

Second, when he hooks up a Zip 100 drive, the FD-8 won't power up. He said that he can see the display barely, but the unit won't function at all. When he powers down and switches back to the Zip 250, it fires right up. Same cable, just with a gender changer. Does this make any sense at all?

If I'm not mistaken, the zip100 isn't a recognized device... only the zip250. And if you use 100mb disks on the zip250, they won't work except as backups.

Is there a disk in the zip when he powers up? Again, if I'm not mistaken, the primary boot is to SCSI and not IDE unless the SCSI device is formatted as backup.
