Favorite Mic and Preamp Set up For Vocals

These are the setups I use most often:

Growlers/screamers/gravelly- SM7b/Joemeek twinQ

clean male vocals: B.L.U.E. Kiwi/Avalon AD2022

Thin vocals in general: Rode NTK/ Pendulum MDP-2

Women with "pretty" voices: Oktava MK-319/Avalon AD2022

Love a Shure Unidyne capsule SM57/546/SM7 (or "soundalike" Beyer M400 Soundstar MKII)
going into a UA 610 tube mic pre for my baritone voice. These can all be pounded into submission later via EQ for enough air/top end if needed.

When time and budget permit, am planning to pick up a Universal Audio 610 Solo (possibly UA 710) mostly for live work. Tested this recently and was astounded how flattering this combo was on me-right up there with a Pearlman 250 (Telefunken 251-ish type sound)/Great River (or Neve Portico) set-up
I was fortunate enough to sing through lately.

Lately I've liked my GT 67 through a Presonus Eureka with the Saturation cranked and some generous compression set to soft knee.

Check through these combos from time to time. I always look back on it and see an interesting match I've never considered!!
 
lead vox

Stephen Paul Neumann U87 into Jensen Twin Servo 990 mic pre into Summit TLA-100A tube compressor

then on playback:

recorded track from computer into Summit Dual Program tube eq, crank the crap out of the treble, then into a cheap ass Boss compressor to bring the treble back down

makes the vox stand out from the track with a shine on it
 
Male vocals, SM7b or Rode K2 into an A Designs Pacifica.

Female vocals, Modded Apex 460 into a GT Brick or the Pacifica
 
Im starting to really like the Shure KSM44 into the Neve 1073...I like how they did the KSM44...its not a copy of the u87 like alot of stuff Ive used in the past...the mid highs are alot smoother and it sits well in the mix.

akg perception 200 through m-audio audio buddy... total package cost = $118

quite possibly one of the cheapest setups posted here... definitely not the greatest sounding... very "sterile." lacks balls. :mad:

Apex460 --> Valley 440 Compressor --> Mackie CR-1604 mixer --> Focusrite Saffire LE

It sounds OK but not great and the noise floor is pretty high.

I have ordered the parts to mod the Apex460 to something MUCH better (new tube, capacitors and capsule will follow shortly). I am also buying an M-Audio DMP3 preamp because that Mackie mixer is too noisy for my tastes.

Hopefully I can get something good out of that.

It sounds OK but not great and the noise floor is pretty high.

I have ordered the parts to mod the Apex460 to something MUCH better (new tube, capacitors and capsule will follow shortly). I am also buying an M-Audio DMP3 preamp because that Mackie mixer is too noisy for my tastes.

Hopefully I can get something good out of that.

Im really suprised that the compressor is even passing the phantom power in that chain.
 
I mainly do my own vocals though I've had a few projects with male vocalists.

The important part of the process is creating a good sounding subspace to record in. I use the Quick Sound Field made with ASC Studio Traps. That implies a working distance of about two feet from source to mike and requires omni or figure of 8 pattern to get the diffuse close reflections in the mike.

I also turn the Studio Traps around to create a dead space and use a cardioid mike. In that case, I'll typically use a modded SM-81 for background vocals or an SM-57 for a thicker lead sound or the AT-4050 for a cleaner lead sound.

If I'm using the QSF, for background vocals and parts that need a flat response, I will use an omni mike, say my AT 4050 or an SM-80.

For up front vocals, I'll switch the AT 4050 to figure of 8 or use a Beyer M130.

I mainly use my SoundDevices MixPre. It's quite good on the condensers. It's not optimal for the ribbon mike, but it does meet the minimum specs in terms of gain and input impedance. The AEA TRP would be a better fit for the ribbon mikes, with a lower noise floor, higher input impedance and a slightly cleaner signal path, but it's not a big deal... the M130s already sound great.

How's that for a non-answer? :)

You'll get something good, but you won't get something great.

The more I deal with that mic and the mods for it, the more I realize there are just too many design flaws in that mic to just "mod it".

A total overhaul would really be the trick.:(
 
Ive tried the AT4047 on top of my KSM44 in omni through the Neve 1073...I have to say that it was my favorite setup I can put together.
