Favorite Mic and Preamp Set up For Vocals

Okay, so let me keep drilling for this off-topic oil (how very topical of me!): How would you describe the sound of the 27/44 compared to some other mics (whatever you can compare it to--I might just know it). And how was the 32 that it wasn't the right fit?

And off-topic we go... :)

First let me say that when I went mic-shopping recently, I had three things in mind: vocals, kick drum, and something for brush work on a snare.

I looked at the 32 first. Vocals: great. Brushes: great. Kick drum: not enough (for my application). The 32 didn't have the "thumpy" proximity effect in the kick that I was looking for.

The 27 worked well across all three pre-requisites. It gave me more low registers on the kick drum (I get a nice jazz sound out of the 27 on the kick and two Audio Technica 2020's as overheads). I'm making a comparison from memory, but I'd venture to say the 27 reminds me of an Audio Technica 4033 that I used in a friend's studio a while back. The Shure has maybe just a touch more high-end coloration. The female singer in my jazz group is a former Broadway singer (i.e. she's a "belter" with plenty of lower-midrange) and the 27 seems to balance the timbre in her voice nicely.

mic/pre

My fav is Telefunken RFT AK 47 with a UA LA 610.
Very nice sound.

Early 80's U87 through the pre du'jour. It really sounds great through everything.

Chameleon pre and eq and P38 compressor. 4047 is my most used vocal mic, out of not all that many other contenders though- KSM32, QTC for 'real', RE20, some ribbons.

EV re-11 through a gt brick and an rnc. (I'm just an infant gearwise) Surprisingly the re-11 beats out my pe modded mk-319(which I love) on the vocalist I work with the most.

KSM44-API 312-LA2a into the DAW
Seems to work for most folks although if the singer is loud an SM7 works wonders...

sm7 - 312 - no comp. it passes well on all voices if you don't have the time to waste...er...work.

Depending on what the song calls for:

RE20/TLM49 > UA M610/Pacifica

RE20 is a good value considering it easily out performs the ATM25, D112, Beta52 & D6 (unless you're doing metal for the D6) for recording kick drum and also handles dynamic vocals in a similar fashion to the SM7. Under $300 used.

Yeah, depends... that said I start with:

Shure SM7
GreatRiver or RNP

That is what I use.

For aggressive vocals: RE20 dynamic / Berlant Conertone old tube pre

For anything else: Gefell UM70 condenser / Yamaha N12 solid state pre

TLM 103 and an Avalon M5. Works on a great variety of singers.

MK319 is my favorite cheapie mic. I got the 219 and the 319 for like $100 or something.

I really should just get it modded already.. I've been 'getting to it' for 2 years now.

Brauner Phantom C into Phoenix DRS 1 (and SM 7 if the singer is too {insert adjective here}) The John Hardy and DAV 1 get a lot of time too

Oh yeah and the Safe Sound if I get a voice with a wide range of volumes

I love my MK319!! I don't use my Studio Project C1 anymore. I'd like to use the MK319 with another preamp to know how it sounds :)
