Oh come on, you have to admit that Yngwie revolutionized guitar playing with the introduction of neo classical metal as well as the refinemnet of the "sweep Picking technique" now whether you enjoy his music or not is up to you. He is also a pretnetions pompus a-hole as well perhaps that is why some many people don't like him:)

Actually I was thinking more of Marcel Coenan (now I remember his name) from Lemur Voice and Suncaged. CHeck out his website at

http://www.marcelcoenan.com

he is Insane!

Depends entirely on who you talk to. Most people who take more than just a cursory interest in the history of Heavy Metal will tell you that Bon Jovi and Extreme at least at one time or another were considered Heavy Metal. I say most, because there are people who think Bon Jovi has always been considered hard rock, and now more currently, heartland rock (Heartland rock is the Segar/Mellancamp/Petty/Etheridge camp, where the musical emphasis is sorta "proud to be American"-ish.) And with Extreme, the core lineup were general metal heads even though the music smacked of pop commercialism.

Sabbath is, was, and always has been metal. They are largely responsible for the genre, along with Deep Purple (circa "In Rock") and Uriah Heep (circa "Uriah Heep") who really turned heads and steered many musicians in a heavier and darker direction.

It gets even more confusing, because Led Zeppelin is not ever seriously considered heavy metal (although they certainly made an impact on the genre). Granted, they certainly hit heavy metal a few times, but they were never consistent in that style.

Contrast that with Def Leppard, who was largely responsible for the British metal movement of the 80s (termed "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", or NWOBHM), and was considered heavy metal by default, despite the fact they later totally abandoned that style for a more commercial lite rock style.

By now you should have a firm grasp on the lack of real specifics of Heavy Metal.

i've seen countless metal shows in the last 25 years and without a doubt the judas priest 'screaming for vengeance' show i saw fu*kin ruled like no other. that was pure METAL at its best.

Need I say...

Thordendal of Meshuggah..
André Olbrich in Blind Guardian
The guy in Darkane
The Amott brothers (Carcass/Arch Enemy)
Mattias Eklund in Freak Kitchen
The guys in Soilwork
James Murphy (esp. on Cause of Death by Obituary)
Marty Friedman (esp. on Rust in Peace and Youthanasia)
Devin Townsend
Eric Petersen in Testament
Pat O'Brien and Jack Owen in Cannibal Corpse
Dimebag
Whoever in Judas makes that f-ed up sweep thing in Painkiller
The dudes playing with King Diamond
Tommy Victor

Probably forgot a dozen...

Richie Sambora? Metal guitarist
Kirk Hamett has made ONE good solo ever... Shortest Straw.

Whoever in Judas makes that f-ed up sweep thing in Painkiller

Glenn Tipton

Another great player is Victor Smolski, the new entry of Rage

Adrian Vandenberg is also amazing. I've just heard the Starkers in Tokyo cd and even if it's all acoustic, it's wanderful.

So that's 3 Dutch guys now! Yeah, we rule! ;)

for the less informed, Eddie Van Halen, Adrian (Adje) Vandenberg en Marcel Coenen are all Dutch.

Oh, and wait... ME too! :D

marty friedmen

rust in piece was good , but.... his solo album "dragons kiss" is killer, and the cocophony "go off" with JASON BECKER IS FUCKIN BAD ASS.

Bruce Boulliet / Racer-X
I think he smoked Paul Gilbert!

Frankie Hannon / Tesla

I know I'll get shit for this.... but Warren D. Martini is a good player. I'm not an 80's cat but he is a good player! I have to listen to it because my wife is stuck in the 80's!

Of course Mr. Lifeson

Rik Emmett / Triumph

Jason Becker is a bad ass indeed. I knew him pretty well at one point. The last time I seen him (about ten years ago), he was very thin and had to use arm braces to walk. That was when he was in good condition. I don't even know if he's with us anymore. I know he was writing music with a device that used chin movements to write into his computer. He would've certainly been a guitar hero had he not been sick!

"James Hetfield before he became Merle Haggard"

Cyrokk, that made me spill my coffee!!!!

It was worth reading the thread just for that.

Alan.

He doesn't stand a chance against the likes of Sean Malone, Tony Choy, Tony Perez, and Lars Norberg. :D
