Alright folks...
Who is your favorite METAL guitarist of all time??
I am gonna have to go with the dual guitarists of the GREATEST Heavy Metal band EVER!!!
K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest!!!

Who is your fave??

Beside the kings and gods of the guitar (VanH, Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen...) I'm gonna pick some "mass unknown" guitarists like
Criss Oliva (Savatage)
Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray)
Kiko Louiero and Rafael Bittencourt (Angra)
Jeff Waters (Annihilator)
Zakk Wylde (Steel Dragon)
Alex Skolnik (Savatage)

-Michael Gilbert (Flotsam & Jetsam)
-Jeff Waters indeed.
-George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob)
-Randy Rhoads (Blizzard of Oz)
-Jon Schaeffer (Iced Earth)
-Guan Garcia and Bernie Versailles (Agent Steel). 2nd best duo next to Tipton/Downing)
-EVH
-Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi)
-Dave Murray/Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden)

my own style has lots of elements of Lynch/Sambora/Murray.

I don't know about best "all time" but a few that im really into right now.

In Flames , has some really nice duel guitar working going on.

Johan- from Andromeda is just insane and hes just getting started (20 years old)

Also like Soilwork's duel guitar approach, its an older cd but "predators Portrait" has some really cool stuff going on.

Anything Spiral architect does as well.

talking about youngs, Alexi Lahio (Children Of Bodom) is great
I forgot to mention KARL LOGAN (ManOwaR)

Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly) - brutal but creative
Scott Ian (Anthrax) - old school... the master of the "mosh part"
James Hetfield - when he was good, he was very, very good
Dave Murray/Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden) - the best at what they do
Chuck Schuldiner (Death) - pretty much defined a genre
Tommy Victor (Prong) - every heavy guitarist should own "Beg to Differ"
Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman (Slayer) - dude, it's Slayer

I know I'm forgetting about 10 guys, for example, Mustaine (Megadeth) was great once, and Skolnick (Testament) was cool back in the day, and there are a million others who've faded into obscurity in the back of my mind...

Its funny how 15 years ago i might have said Kirk hammet or kerry king or one of the wankers (vai,satch,malm)......but now, how can anyone say anything but.......

Man, these favorites are killin' me!

I know I'm gonna forget someone I really dig, but here goes:

Randy Rhoads — gave me my first taste of classically influenced playing and left me wanting more.

James Hetfield — pre-"Black Album" Jaymz's playing was what every metal player I knew wanted to achieve.

Andy LaRocque and Pete Blakk — the axesters behind King Diamond's album Them, which slew me when I first heard it.

Dave Mustaine — possibly the most original riffster in all metal, and a pretty decent lead player, too.

Gotta stop for now, but I'm sure I'll be back! :D :p :D

Slash
Richie Sambora
Vito Bratta
Randy Rhoads
Zakk Wylde
etc...

-"Them" had a lot of killer solo, andy also had alot of cool leads on DEATH's indivdual thought patterns.
-All of Alex Skolnicks stuff w/ testament, i couldent get into the savatage stuff.
-Of corse- malmsteen.
-James Murphy(death, naplam, disincarnate, testament, 2 solo albums on sharpnel)
-Eric Rutan's lead stlye is very differant(morbid a., hate eternal, ripping corpse)
-Dallas toler Wade(nile)
-Paul Ryan(origin) he only does rythmic like lead licks on the album, but i saw him warming up live , and dam he can sweep like the shrapnel dudes

Jeff Loomis-Nevermore
Dime-Pantera
James,and Kirk-Metallica
Jesper Stromblad, and Bjorn Gellotte-In Flames
Ola Frenning, and Pete Wichers-Soilwork
The Brothers Amott-Arch Enemy
Dave Mustaine-Megadeth
ANY KING DIAMOND/MERCYFUL FATE GUITARIST
And many many more.................................

the guitarists in GWAR, MyDyingBride, and the guy who played guitar on moonspell's "wolfheart" album.

it'd be hard to choose my fave out of those.... probably gwar.

So many great guitarists. I wont name the obvious ones like Lynch, malmsteen, vai, etc. How about Pete Willis from the early Def Leppard albums. The guy just smokes and never got much credit.

i saw a thing on vh1 about D-L and they interviewed that pete guy...jeez it was kinda sad....you could tell he was not happy with how things turned out...i hope they sent him a big huge fat check.

a couple that haven't been mentioned, based on a quick scan of the first bunch of posts....

Vernon Reid (Living Colour) - that guy could shred like crazy, and played a lot of bizarre sounding notes that totally worked... playing "outside the box" if you will

Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) - nuff said

Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem) - like the other two, just plain scary....

Angus - just because he was the first player to really make me love the guitar and I still love to "air guitar" to pretty much anything from the AC/DC catalogue (though, like Hendrix, not really a TECHNICALLY great player.....ooooohhhh had to get THAT in there :p )
