Extreme Newbie...

Hello there, I'm an extreme newbie from a god forsaken land called Malaysia. My band and I are planning to record a DIY demo in our home studio. I recently purchased n-Track and have it on my computer now. Would anyone be kind enough to walk me through the process of using n-Track and sorta be my personal tutor? I'm so lost even when I look at the main window. I'm kinda new to the recording world as well. I would really appreciate it. Thank you! :)
 
All user interfaces are intimidating when you first look at it. N-track's interface is actually much simpler than most others.

What you really need to do is put plenty of personal quality time into using the software and fiddle with the buttons to see what they do. The online manual and tutorial is the best place to start. I doubt anyone has the time to be a personal tutor for you, but I'm sure if you have specific questions, they can be addressed here.

Andrew - Yes, I'd definitely second what kt said, but also encourage you to download the pdf manual. Print it out, put it in a binder and it's the quickest way to get your head round it. FA put a loti nto writing it and it deserves reading; it gives you the walkthrough you ask for, rather better than most of us here could.
The FAQ sticky here is pretty useful too, also there's a forum on the fasoft site. Best of luck - you should have a lot of fun.
 
Yep I understand... Maybe I'll ask single questions now. Forgive me as I'm quite lost... I apologize for the silly questions...

1. How do you change the volumes of tracks as compared with each other?

2. How do you mix tracks down into 1 wav file?

3. Why is it when I want to put effects on a track i always end up selecting the left/right track only? Is this the way? Can't I do both?

4. How do I do panning?

You're going to have to read the manual, but I will try and answer these questions as I'm just sittin here anyhow...


1: Hit F3, that'll give you the master mixer. Adjust your volumes with the vertical sliders.

2: Ctrl-R

3: I don't know why, what are you doing? That is the way if you want it that way. Sure you can do both.

4: Edit>Volume/Pan Drawing>Draw Pan...or use the mixer.


Again, you're going to have to read the manual, don't worry, everybody who asks these questions gets told that ;). You will find that becoming familiar with the manual will save you an incredible amount of time in answering most simple questions you may have, as opposed to asking them here or at the Fasoft site.

Funny I can't find the manual... I can only find the FAQ... One question... The compression plugins that come with the program are demo versions right? Where can I get more plugins that are not demo's? Thanks badassmak! :)

p.s... To my question 3, no I don't want it that way. I want to add to both left and right stereo tracks....
 
Hello, the newbie is back...! Please forgive me for another very basic question...

Say I want to record a song which has a keyboard intro and its kinda long... And I want to be able to hear the keyboard while I play my track (I'm the drummer)... Meaning I'm doing the first track and my keyboard player does his track after me (on n-Track of course)... So my track basically has a long silence before I come in...

Ok... Here's what I've thought I should do. He records a scratch track on his keyboard with a click (coming from his keyboard) and I'll use that as a monitor to record into pc... On the parts in the intro which I'm supposed to be silent, I play my hi-hat. My keyboard player then records another time into the pc listening to my track. I then erase the hi-hats in the beginning...

1. Is this the only way to do it? In a home recording setting of course...

2. How do I erase the hi-hats in the beginning on my track in n-Track?

I'd appreciate all the advice I can get. Thanks a million! :)

Just thought I'd throw that in first off. That's the page where yu will find the n-track manual.

I think in regards to a 'click track', personally I would just record one giant click track by itself for both the keyboard and drums to follow along. Then when you are done just erase that click track.

If you wanted to do it your way still, I think you can just select the area you don't want, and 'cut' that piece out. Or you could use the 'volume envelope' feature.

If you are going to make a 'giant click track' the metronome function will work, but I think most people around here prefer to make one elsehow, for example your keyboard.

Did you ever figure out question #3?...

Thanks a million again!... Yeah I've downloaded it a while ago, I've been trying to study it. But I find sometimes the terms still bug me... For a newbie I hope thats normal...

No actually, I've never figured it out. Say I record in Stereo (2 twin mono tracks), everytime I try to apply effects, I can only do it one at a time... I'm feeling kinda stupid because of this... :)

1) As has been stated, use the faders in the mixer. You can also use the faders on the individual track mixers if you wish. Just click the arrow in the box to the left of the track. That will open the track mixer.

2)Use the "mixdown" feature. File>mixdown song or click the icon in the toolbar that looks like a CD with a small yellow arrow on it. If you click the "more options" in the mixdown window it will give a lot of control over which tracks are included in the mixdown.

3) The easiest way would be to record your stereo tracks as a single stereo file instead of seperate tracks. Since you didn't you can send the output of the files to a group track and then apply effects to the group track. ( click the heading of the track in the mixer window and the select "send to group 1" in the "output to" field. You can also assign the effect to an aux channel and then use the aux faders to send and return them.

4) Panning slider in the mixer window.

Thanks Terry! I really appreciate it... I haven't recorded anything just yet so now I know I should use the stereo in one track. I just found out how to do it... :)

The F3 shortcut doesn't work in mine somehow. But no biggie, I know how to fire up the mixer. Thanks a million again! :)

If I've created a wav file region, how do I remove it? Is it possible?
