That's Fostex' new marketing strategy... if you charge enough for it, people will think they're worthwhile... and they will buy!

Sort of reminds me of when I went into a Time's Square electronics store to get a small pair of speakers so I could listen to music on my laptop back at my hotel. They wanted $200 for a pair of $35 Sony computer speakers and that was after they said I was getting a substatial discount.

Did you notice that there's not even a tweeter! :D Full range man, full range!

On a semi-related topic, I was at Sam's club today and was almost floored by the price of a Surround sound system by bose.....the surround speakers were the size of my brother's computer speakers (100$), and the subwoofer was about the same. The price: 1500$. I don't care if it is bose, that is a bloody jack. My friend was all like "Damn, if I was going to get a system, that'd be it". I couldn't help but chuckle.

How Bose ever got such a good reputation is beyond me???

It's amazing how many people don't realize that if they just do the tiniest bit of research they can get so much more for their money.

Actually, I know a guy that uses these for mastering along with Dynaudio BM-15 nearfields (last time I was there he had Event 20/20s) and Dynaudio M3's. The fostex speakers don't sound great or anything but they have there purpose.

With Bose it's all in the marketing, and the fact that many ignorant people have far too much disposable income. I bought one of their Bose-boom-boxes (way back in the early 1980s) and although the idea of the folded-labyrinth-ported-speaker-thingy was quite novel in such a small box, that was just about all it had going for it. The cassette deck on the damned thing was so very "Fisher-Price", being all mechanical-action, "clunck-thunk-spriong" (this, in a toy costing nearly $1k !!); tone-controls which were a joke! - a radio-tuner which was even more of a joke - "...yes, Ladies and Gentlemen! 5 (five) count 'em one two three four FIVE presets, on this box costing.. er, uh.. HOW MUCH!!!!..."

Ah well, it never ceases to amaze me as to what folks would rather have than money!

Yah, but did you here the bose wave radio....Aw man, that big stereo sound from a radio that can fit on top of your microwave and costs like two hundred bucks even though it doesn't even have a tape player never mind a CD spinner or EQ.......NOw that is a bargain :D
