although i do not totally agree with you about the soup can i'd say you know what i mean. But i'm not talking about the songs. i mean the sound. it's like thewy tried to make it so good somewhere a long the road they lost the idea why that sound (or tone if you will) was made.
can't explain it properly. sorry

now something totally different: Vurt, you're posting like a madman! you have passed me and i thaught i was a quickposter(this cannot be correct english;))

hey Miker,

i listened to stumbling, and I thought that it was mixed well enough, except maybe the vocals were a little too loud in places.

But the fact is that mastering is a whole different beast. A whole different beast, and you can't expect to get a great mastered product for another few years, with those big monitors, in a very big room, with a lot of money spent on room treatment, and balaincing speakers, and eqing the speakers etc, and training with people who have good ears etc

Even some great mixing people suck at mastering Cos it's a whole different beast.

Question: Did you mix stumbling within software or with your mackie mixer? thanks

Cyan,

Thanks for listening.

It was mixed on the computer ( MOTU 2408 ).

Mastering, yeah, let's leave it to those who know what they're doing.....

thanks again,

Michael

My, my, my...look at all this discussion regarding the topic of recording. What's this site coming to? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

you're welcome miker,

Ok I am listening to it again, and let me tell you, that is one heck of a song. I hope you've got some radio play.

And you know what. radio does stuff to songs, eg compression, so your song will sound even better on radio.

Ok. two more questions.

What software did you use to mix?
what mike through what pre was that on the lead vocal and what kind of reverb did you use, if any?

thanks

ps Don't run out and buy studio monitors just yet if you don't need to.

guhlenn, I agree that a 'not so clean sound' can also be good. To me, good is what is appropriate for the song, and sometimes the song or band calls for a dirty sound.

And the Korn album you speak of sounds that way becasue the songs are different. You may not think so, but they have changed their style. I think the sound of 'follow the leader' is much much better than the first album, although the song writing may be lacking, it still sounds better.

Cyan,
Thanks so much for the kind words.

Any of the effects are straight from Audiodesk ( the software that comes with the MOTU 2408 )

Lead vocal is a Mackie 1604VLZ with, if I remember correctly, an SM58.

Sometimes we get lucky : )

As far as monitors, I found a pair of Event 20/20bas today for $550. ( found some PS-8s yesterday for $450, but I think I'm gonna go with the 20/20s ---a better overall deal.

I really appreciate the compliments. If you have a chance, check out some of our other songs on garageband or mp3 ( they'll all be listed under Spilling Poetry ), and let me know what you think.

thanks,

MIchael

hi miker,

I took a listen to your three songs, and I will say I like "never what you need" the best of all, and it seems to be doing well at number 195, but it does not hold a candle to stumbling imho.

Stumbling has more emotion, more feeling. I would like to say post it on gb.com, but I am not a rocker, and rockers have different tastes.

Good job though, and nice songwriting

thanks again.

( also, I didn't realize it was 195 in the "rock" category, that's a nice surprise ! )

The less-rockin' stuff seems to be our better songs ( lyrically and emotionally ), but we all enjoy turning up for the "poppier" stuff. Again, in an act of shameless self-promotion, you can go to http://www.spillingpoetry.com and, judging from your tastes, might I suggest downloading "Weight of the World" ( it can be found in the media area ). Also, I think a song called "Wisdom" is up on garageband ( it tends more to the mellow side as well )
O.k., I'm done pimping my band. ( for now )

Well Guhlenn, I've been on vacation so have had more time to spend around here. I could drop off these boards at any given moment though, only to return in four months. My average post count per month is probably very low. Sometimes there's just not much to say, ya know:)

hahahaha. Not even sir cool, not even. That is why some over processed songs sound like crap on radio. Cos radio adds its own compression.

ametth,

besides liking some album better. believe me the songs weren't written that way. not that sound. that's pro-tools you're hearing. i read some article with munky who said " when we came out of the studio and went playing live it was really difficult to get all those effects that we put on the cd to work live. He did all this crazy stuff with it and now i'm looking to get that sound live, it's hard to figure out which effects to use and in which way to use 'm.

Although you can still argue that they agreed to do it this way i don't think that's korn writing songs. i think that's a producer outa control!

but hey, who am i to judge. and i don't like the sound because of this over production. it's kinda dead with all those effects over almost everything.

but i guess that's just taste...

Well, that's what I'm saying..radio fucks up EVERYTHING! It doesn't matter if the song was overprocessed (whatever that means) or not, radio compression an EQ suck. If you take a CD that sounds good, and listen to the same song on the radio, I guarantee that the CD will sound way better. If it doesn't, you better have your ears checked.

my 2 cents on the big radio sound:

I agree that the radio EQ and compression pretty much ruins all that is good about music. My band did a few interviews on the staions around Boston, when they played a track off the record hearing it on headphones was terrifying! I mean it was entertaining but not how I imagine anyone would want their music to sound. Just soooooooo compressed. I understand that stations have to do this to some degree due to the nature of radio, and that's cool, but like most things it becomes a contest to be loudest....I've noticed that classic rock stuff generally sounds ok on the radio, because it wasn't super-compressed and limited to begin with. All the "modern rock" stuff sounds horrible because it's squashed already. I dunno maybe I'm just getting old....
