has anyone here tried a clear pinstripe on their snare? how about other non-coated heads? i'm looking for a head that will be kind of thuddy, but that will still allow ghost notes and rolls to be heard.

good luck with that, try just tuning your snare lower or loosening your snares.

help me out and do your ten incher with a blue hydro head. :p

Hopefully I'll have the head for my 10 incher in hand tonight. :p :D :D

I looked around yesterday, but finding a 10" hydraulic head out here (Oahu) is a real pain. There's really only 1 good drum store, and they were closed yesterday. I'll post back up with status after I stop by there on my way home from work.

I use clear pinstripes for all of my batter heads, including the snare.

I've been using the blue hydraulics on an old Yamaha kit for recording and I like them. They have a nice deep tone for the floor tom especially. Here's a clip of a rough mix with them, toms are used a bit in the beginning.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with them and the actual drummer liked them a lot. I was suprised to see so many people trashing them when I think I initially tried them based on comments in this forum last year.

well I finally got my Catalina Birch and and hydro heads and I like them but I like the coated heads better so what I did was put the hydro on the bottoms and kept the coated on top, and it kind of the best of both worlds so I m glad that worked out. And the gretsch is the bomb.

I have a set of drums but don't consider myself a real drummer per se. I'm looking to change the heads and was planning on getting the remo pinstripes. A friend of mine also considered the black dots. Any suggestions on this. We play mostly metal/ rock.
....I don't mean to hijack, just that there was lots of talk about the pinstripes.

I've heard about these too. You recommend these for metal? snare too?
(not that I'm questioning it I'm just new to drums)

For snare... i recommend either Evans power center, or EVans ST.

Ebony Pinstripes...

sound better than the clear. I love them, though the black can be transferred from head to stick to cymbals... which kind of sucks.

If you're looking for a fat sound without a whole lot of sustain or overtones, they may be just what you're looking for. They can sound really great if you mic each drum individually. If you're doing a minimalist-type recording setup with just a pair of overheads they probably won't work well for you...they're fairly quiet and don't project too well. But they can be the bee's knees when you mic them up close.

I will second the G2s.

I use clear and coated depending on what mood I'm in.
The clears give great attack and sustain and the coated a more traditional sound which is great for Jazz or Classic Rock.

If they are good enough for Dennis Chambers they're good enough for me!

Also try a Remo Fiberskyn on your snare. It sounds awesome!
I'll post a clip soon!

I'm planning to switch to G1's. I was istening to classic rock radio, and realized how shitty the drums sounded, they sounded so dead. The more resonance the better. As for snare, I love the power center.

I had the evans g2 coated on my tama rocktar (22 - 10,12,14) they were cool but I wanted more attack. So I tried clear g2's and pinstripes and hated them both on the tama (G2's better than pinstripes by far). On my old yamaha stage custom the clear g2's were great. The only drum I could get to sound good was the 10 inch. Everything else sounded loose and flimsy when I got the pitch or tone I desired. So I tried moon gel which kinda helped but deadens the drums. So far the coated G2's are the best for intermediate drums. I also tried clear Aquarians with the muffle ring but didnt like the feel or tone quality. But what can you expect from a $499 drum set. At my old school we had a Yamaha Birch custom. Any heads we put on that kit sounded good. What I am thinking about trying is keeping the coated g2 on the 10 inch and getting hydraulics for the 12 and 14. The 12 inch is the drum I have the most problem tuning. It seems as if the shell is made bad. I cant get it to sound the way I want and neither can other people. (Friends, and GC staff).
