Error driving me crazy!

Back when I was home (not in college) I used to get this message all the time when I tried to record or playback using n track: "error opening wave out device." Eventually, I figured out that having winamp open was causing this error, and as long as I didn't have winamp open while using n track, I wouldn't get the error.

Enter college and a new setup: new computer, new soundcard, new mic... basically, nothing the same as the old computer (I don't even have winamp any more). Much to my dismay... after I install n track... I get "wave output device" error as soon as I try working with an old song project. Now, I am completely befuddled as to what could be causing this error.

Could it be that your old project is still referencing the audio drivers for the soundcard that was on your old computer?

hmmm

further experimentation reveals that I get the error even on new projects

What's you computer specs?
What OS are you using?
What soundcard?
What drivers are you using in n-Track? Preferences > Audio Devices
Also, be certain that your new soundcard supports the sample rate and bit depth your projects are set at.

Hmm... I changed the audio drivers for input and output from SB Live! to Direct X and now recording and playing back works!

Is there any downside to changing to Direct X?

There's an option in the preferences to "keep device open" which might be causing this error. Try toggling this setting and see if the error goes away.

I've never tried the DirectX drivers and don't recall anyone ever receommending them (I suspect they are just another layer of processing that you don't need). You might also want to take a look at the KX driver project which is often recommended for Sound Blaster users.
