anyone who does this stuff for a living that I've ever met does not refer to devices run from AUX sends as inserts either.
???? You should re-read my posts..... I never referred to AUX sends as INSERTs.... in fact, quite the opposite......

It was *you* who was being unclear in this statement "...BTW - you cannot really run your EQ as an insert effect... it should be between the board and the amp(s)...." and I was trying to clarify it.......

What's an insert effect? It's either an insert or it's an effect (ie AUX) send....... anything in-line between one piece of gear and another is an insert.

Quibbling? Sure, you can call it that -- but things are much more easily understood (especially by those new to the field) when everyone uses the terms appropriately............

Bruce isnt using "HIS" terminology - just the "PROPER" terminology. The sun doesnt revolve around the earth.

Ok guys,

Blue, as I stated, I'm not disputing that you are technically correct in the "school book" sense..... inserts being a device 'inserted' between point A and point B in the signal path.

A highway is technically a "road", but then so is a street, drive, avenue, parkway and so on. If I referred to a highway as a "road", you'd look at me kinda funny !! As would any sound engineer I've met if I called the main EQ an insert !!

What I am disputing is day to day semantics. I may not have been perfectly clear to those new to the field "...BTW - you cannot really run your EQ as an insert effect... it should be between the board and the amp(s)...."

Again ..... " I've never heard of any device (EQ included) on the post mixer side of the PA signal chain called an insert". That is my experience. Right or wrong, I was taught that "inserts" are channel inserts.
Regards,
Steve

mm2k5,

Example. (this gets complicated AND technical, so be patient pls.)
Say you have 2, 8 Ohm speakers (say 300w RMS, 600w peak) daisy-chained. If parallel'd, the total impedance back at the amp is 8 + 8 = 16 ohms. If series, it is (8 + 8)/2 = 8 ohms.

Isn't this ass backwards? 2 8 ohm speakers in parallel are 4 ohms not 16.

Yes it is..... seems our buddy Steve here has a a number of things backwards........

Ya know, my lovely new Sountracs console calls em main inserts. I guess those Brits must be crazy or something.

Oops, guess I didn't 'review' my post closely enuf.... You are correct. I have it backwards.

it should have said..

Say you have two 8 Ohm speakers (say 300w RMS, 600w peak) daisy-chained. If in series, the total impedance back at the amp is 8 * 2 = 16 ohms [Impedance * nbr speakers]. If in parallel, it is (8/2) = 4 ohms. [Speaker impedance / nbr speakers]

My mistake,
Steve
