Got my Epi Les Paul Standard today. Gosh, it's an awesome guitar. Great sound and feel. Yeah, i bought it used and its a 1998 instrument. It has black hardware and transparent black body (flame maple top). The LP Standards today don't have black hardware... Does anybody know more about Epi's in 1998 and around then?

Looks like a great guitar !!
I recently got one a couple of months ago, I had been playing a gibson sg for several years. I was so impressed by the sound and feel of the epiphone that I havent played the SG since.
I am sure you will really like it. Quality is exceptional and not even 1/2 the price of the SG !!

I got one Tuesday. I used to own a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe but had to sell it.

This guitar feels and plays as well if not better. I know somewhere down the line I'll see a major difference between the Gibson and Epiphone but for now it's difficult to pick out.

yea, im glad you guys have had same experience with Epi. :)
I always doubt when people compare cheaper stuff to Gibson but now I see that there is some truth... Of course there is a slight difference but Epiphone most certainly does an awesome job.
I almost bought an ESP... but I think God helped me to find the right path!

I've got an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I switched out the pickups for a pair of Classic 57's, and it rocks.-Richie

whoa... deja vous! i bought an epi a few years back with the same finish and hardware, except with a clear pickguard, i love it. congrats!

Jeje! Looks like mine.. :p
do you know.. Is it a regular LP Standard?
Any idea what the pickups are?

Nice looking axe, congratz! I used to own an epi standard and a custom. Make sure to keep an eye on the jack, they have a habit of coming loose.

I have a Blue epi LP standard from '97. I put a seymour duncan in the bridge position, and I really love it.

Traidma-

Is that a bolt on neck, or does it have a crack at the neck heel? Maybe it's just a funny glare in the picture, but it looks like a line on the heel where the neck was broken off.

I have a solid black Epi LP myself. not much to look at, but it has Burstbuckers (1&2), all RS Electronics upgraded wiring, Tone Pros bridge, and Grover tuners. It really is a great guitar, and sounds better than some of the Gibson LPs I regularly use in studio. But the '68 LP Custom I use on EVERYTHING kicks its butt:).

Yea, its a bolt on. Nice guitar, H2H :D
Gabriel_0, yea, I already had to fix the jack... it made noises like hell. But a little screwing around made it perfect.

I'm also thinking about getting decent pickups.. Any suggestions?
Which is better.. Gibson or Seymour Duncan?

And what about updating the electronics? What is mainly meant under that? hehe, sry, im pretty new to electrics.. used to be 100% acoustic until few months ago.

I only asked because I was not aware that they made Epi LP's that looked that nice with bolt necks. I had an Epi LP around '98 that had a quilt top in blue, but it was a set neck. it was a "Standard Limited", or so it was stamped on the back of the headstock.

If it has a bolt neck is it still a standard? Does it say "Les Paul" on the headstock? I just wondered, it looks very nice.

As to the electronics. Well, pickups are more personal preference than anything, but I spent last year putting Gibson Burstbuckers in everything I could fit them in. I put them in my '73 SG standard and loved them so much I put them in my LP's too. The electronics upgrades include new pots, switch, output jack, and capacitors. You can buy them as a package at several places. I got mine from www.rsguitarworks.com and have been really happy. You can get cheaper sets from other places like stew-mac.

Yea, it does have Les Paul in the headstock. yea, I just checked about the today's Epi LP standards. They have set neck.. thats weird. But my neck plate is really pretty :D so, im ok with it... hehe, that sounds so unprofessional.
Thats like how my mom bought skis... bought the prettiest ones and the color that fits her skiing suit. Happened to be the cheapest and worst skis but she was happy! Oh well.. hehe.

So... do you guys have a neck plate or not?

Are you sure that what you have isn't an Epi LP 100? They have bolt on necks and sel for about $300.00 if memory serves me. As far as I know Standards and higher have always had set knecks. I may be wrong and I'm sure if i am i will be corrected ;)

Gabriel

I wondered that myself BUT...

LP100 doesnt have Les Paul written in the headstock and they have open-coil pickups. And LP100's have slimmer body...
So, its pretty much out of a question that its LP100... Still wondering what the hell it is..
Does anybody know if Standards were made with bold-on necks in the end of 1990s?

I agree with you. That is the first bolt neck Les Paul I have seen with body binding, neck binding, trap inlays, and a flametop.

And I too have no idea what it is :)

Have you asked at the epiphone forum off the Gibson website?

H2H

I beat you to it!

ha ha, maybe someone there will know for you.

H2H

heh, waited for 2 days to get answer from there... nothing. There's like 3 posts a day... pretty dead place.. so, fi anybody knows where I can find more about my bolted Standard, let me know!
