Epi Valve Junior Head - Cab suggestions?

I've been looking at the combo, but after all the raving about the head got to thinking about what commercially available portable cab would be good?

I'm thinking about something inexpensive and small, maybe a 2x10 or 2x12 with a handle (easy to move)? Any suggestions?

I really don't want to build anything.
 
There is a matching cab with the VJ and from what I hear it isn't bad at all. Other than that, what are you looking to spend? Orange makes some really killer 2x12 cabs which I'm sure wouldn't suck with the VJ.

Just like the head is really cheap, I'm looking to spend as little as possible (but have useable tone). Orange would be quite out of my range, although nice stuff.

The matching Epi cab might work, but it's a single speaker. If I went with the head, I'd really want a couple speakers, I like how multiple speakers sound.

I'm afraid there aren't a ton of cheap options for 2x12's, especially ones with speakers that are worth a crap. Keep in mind something like 2 Vintage 30 Celestions alone is going to run you over $200 bucks. You may want to look at some really cheap manufacturers or possibly go up to a cheap 4x12, although I'd much rather have one killer speaker in a 1x12 cab vs. crappy speakers in a 2x12. I've recorded with 1x12's, 2x12's and 4x12's and in most situations you would never know which is which.
 
About a year ago I looked for a used 2x12 for my Epi (any new 2x12 would have costed at least 2 or 3 times what the head costed - not an acceptable solution). There were several used 4x12 (which I did not need) - but I did finally find a used 2x12 Peavey - but it still ended up costing almost twice what the head costed.

I recently bought the matching Epi cab (which was not available a year ago). It's a very decent cab and I now use it instead of the 2x12 (if it wasn't for the shipping costs I'd offer to sell you my 2x12).

If you are determined you want a low cost 2x12 you should look used (but good luck - I don't think many people sell 2x12s). If you want a used 4x12 you will likely find plenty.

However, for $129 - the matching 1x12 Epi cab ain't bad.
 
YEah, I'm starting to lean back towards the combo. I don't record and just needed one for practice/rehearsal, something easy to lug around and with decent sound (and CHEAP).

well I was going to suggest building a couple of 1x10 with peizos but you said you dont want to build anything.
you may want to tale a look at aguliar they make some really reasonably priced cabs.

From time to time you can pick up speakers, loaded cabs and/or empty cabs nicely priced. You're still over $200 for a loaded 2x12 though.

So, all you guys, who build cabinets - do you follow some sort of tuning or calculation, or just build something that would fit/hold the speaker(s) and add an input jack?

I have come across some tubes and a speaker taken out of an old electric organ (not sure if it was Hammond). Originally, I was gonna take the organ, but I don't even know if it's still available, but a friend of mine did remove tubes and a speaker (I haven't seen them yet, so don't know what kinds/sizes they are).

I wonder if I can build a cab easily/cheaply. I don't have a lot of tools or a place to work, but maybe might be able to borrow some stuff.

If I build, I'd go for a dual speaker design, because it's more than 1 and less than 4 (so it's easy to carry).

Maybe some websites? How about what's better: 2x10 or 2x12?

And I personally wasn't too thrilled.

I, too, am still looking. Almost bought the cab with the intention of swapping speakers down the road, just for convenience and expediency.

It was stil pretty LOUD, though, if that's what you want.


Just another opinion, you'll have to try it out as yours may vary.
 
I plug mine into my Peavey XXX 4/12 cab and it sounds fine.
 
Thanks all for your help. After listening to some online sound samples I decided to get the little Behringer GDI21 SansAmp copy while I "hunt" for a tube amp I can live with.

The head definitely sounds like the way to go - it's cheaper than even the cheapest low-wattage amp kit you can get, but already assembled.

Maybe someday I'll find a throwaway cab at a pawnshop, then the Epi head will be waiting for me :)
 
i wish the head had an FX loop. Then i would buy it in a heart beat.
