Got a question:

My son has a kind of small recording space in our old guest room. We've been thinking about making a larger room-in-a-room personal studio in the garage for a better recording space. But, it's damn expensive. I had a thought. Please tell me if it is worth considering.

I know the existing small space (13 x 14 feet) is not great for recording drums. But, what if we had a really good electric drum kit instead of a regular drum kit? Then, the size of the room would not matter. Would it sound as good? Would bands he might track be willing to use it too?

We would be inputing this into a Pro Tools DigiDesign 002R system.

the new roland kit td -20 is around £4500 - probably cheaper in us - but not cheap - but for a decent electric kit you're looking at $2000 i reckon to get one of the roland kits that actually have a natural feel with the "mesh" heads, not the rubber ones. They're great for practice and i'd love to own one if i had a spare couple of thousand but they do sound kind of sterile and aren't quite as fun to play......but easy to set up and will sound better than a crappy kit with crappy mic's and they tend to have pretty good resale value as well. - but there's nothing like the kick of a 22" DW bass drum etc.....recorded well......and it kind of takes the fun out of recording to me...but easy to put into pro tools and only takes two tracks.
