effects: insert or send

Hi,

I do feel a little bit uncertain about using an effect as an insert or as a send effect. Is there a certain rule about? I know the advantage of using a send is than you can change the dry to wet ratio. I also know that Compressors and eq's are used as insert effects because the whole signal has to run through them. But what about delays and reverbs and other effects?

Most time-based effects (reverbs/delays/choruses/etc...) will be routed via AUX SENDS....

Generally, as Bruce said, time based effects (reverb, delay, flange, chorus) go to AUX SENDS. Processors (EQ, compressors) go to an INSERT.

Yes, here's the rule:

If an effect changes the signal in some way, like an EQ or compressor, then it's used inline and patched into an Insert point.

If an effect adds new content to the signal - echo, or reverb which adds many little echoes - then it's added to an Aux bus and controlled with a Send knob.
