Editing MP3's or WAV's

I'm pretty new to this whole computer recording thing. Using n-Track, I rendered (mixed down) my first song recently to both a WAV and MP3 file. How do I edit each (or either) file to cut out the silent beginning and end? Is there particular software for doing this? If yes, what's the best (preferably freeware). For all I know, I may already have the necessary software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
