Hello, Goodbye' was a song I just had to learn when it came out. Mastering those walks, made me feel like a "Professional" :D :D . Not bad for a 14 yr. old,,,I grinned! Sorry, guess that is not one of their easiest tunes? ;) ;)

I've always thought McCartney's bass was, on the whole, the best instrumental part in most of the Beatles' arrangements. When I listen to the Beatles my ear always gets pulled in by the bass.

....but otherwise, no pressure....eh?

My first exposure to Beatles music was mostly through little cheesy radios, and it was a real revelation the first time I heard them through a real sound system....

Sounds like you love the Anthology tapes as much as I.

he extensively used the technique of counterpoint, which makes his bass lines very appealing indeed!

[[which makes his bass lines very appealing indeed!]] Exactly, and, I liked your Rain song. Did you do the background harmony?

Sorry to get off topic for a moment, but have you guys heard the Love remix album yet? It's quite controversial, and we can discuss in another thread if you want.. but I have to say - the blend of "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is awesome!

Ok, Beatles bass lines....

I absolutely love the line to "Something." Very inventive and complimentary to the vocal melody. Probably my favorite bass line.

Of course "Come Together"... a bit tricky to do it exactly right, at least for this ham-fisted bass player....

If you listen to "Taxman" closely, there are a few super-quick runs that are truly amazing. Another great bass line IMHO.

And the bass line in "Old Brown Shoe" is pretty killer.

An interesting observation: Each of those songs with (IMO) outstanding bass lines was written by someone other than McCartney. Could it be that he channeled his creativity into his bass more effectively on other people's stuff? Or... was he just showing off, seeking the limelight?

I don't know and frankly, I don't care. McCartney rocks as a bassist any way you look at it.

I think it was more of a progression of his influences; he heard things he liked and applied them to where he thought they'd fit. An early form of this is taking Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You" and applying it to "I Saw Her Standing There". Later, he applied James Jamerson,Duck Dunn and Brian Wilson into songs; and likely Entwhistle as well.

Is that Duck Dunn as in Donald Dunn, the guy who played with Neil Young so often?
