Hello. I was just wondering about the differences between the Sennheiser E609 and the E609 Silver.

I bought a Sennheiser E609 from a shop here in north Europe. Finland more specifically. It cost about 160 Euros. Is it the silver or the other one?

It's dark grey in color and looks just like the one at Sennheiser's homepage. It is brand new and I bought it maybe two months ago. It has a BLACK grille. which one is it?

Does it say clearly SILVER somewhere on the mic if it's the silver version?

thanks, and sorry in advance for the dumb question.

One is silver.

Silver is obviously better, because it is a precious metal.

Looking at the brochures at Sennheiser's page, I noticed that there are two different E609 mics and I think I have the E609 without the silver.

But looking at the frequency response curves, the black E609 has a much flatter response which is good? or is it? :)

Oh, you wanted actual help. I have never used this mic, but a flat frequency response curve is not always desireable. Some of the most coveted mics in the world have bumps in their curves that are part of their unique sound. The real question is, what sounds good to you? If you like the sound of the black one, that is what counts.

This mic comes up a lot here, and I've seen it mentioned several times that the new one (the "silver") sounds better.

I actually bought my E609 without any knowledge of a "silver" edition or anything... bummer, because I too have heard that the silver is supposed to be better. But the silver has a boost bump at about the same place as a Shure SM57 so will it sound more like an SM57 than the flatter black grilled E609 ?

Please, anyone who has tested both E609's ?

FWIW, I have the e609 silver, and I like it better than the 57 on guitar cabs. I also use it on bass cabs with good results.

I too like my Sennheiser better than a 57. I've done some recordings with both and that sounded nice also.

Yeah - me too. The SM-57 is much fussier about which preamp you use with it, and it's not as simple to position either. Don't get me wrong... I've got ten SM-57s (the U.S.-made version) that I've used on countless projects, and they're a good, flexible dynamic mic. But i bought my first e609se when it first came out (I didn't care for the original e609, especially for the price), and I've been using it on most all guitar combos and cabs ever since because it sounds "less brittle" than my 57's, and the tracks "sit" better my the mixes with the e609se. It's the easiest to position mic I've ever used too... shove it close to the grill, between the dust cap and the surround of the speaker. Yum. FWIW.

I prefer the silver version too...But what the black version is very useful for, is combining it with a 57 on the same cab. They are very different, and you can mix the balance of the two afterwards for effective 'eq without eq'.

I mixed a band at the Reading festival in london, and all the stages were using a 57/e609 black combo on all the guitar cabs (unless bigger bands/engineers requested or brought something else). They compliment each other well.

That's funny, I've always heard that the older black versions were more desirable?..........I just purchased a new on off of ebay for 130 bucks. I haven't received it yet, but we'll see when it get's here.

Thanks,
Rick
