well, i think the title appropriately sets up my question. i know that the MD421 is pretty much standard on toms but i've heard lots of good things about people using some LD condensors. suggestions? also what about SM57s?

They will all work. 57's are fine. Most people use dynamics, but a lot of people use condensers. Neil Peart uses AT4033's on his toms. Experiment and pick the one that best suits your needs. Sennheiser e604's are really good too, as well as the sure tom mics.

it depends

condensers tend 2 have more spil on them, wich is cool when there are no overheads.
Dynamic's mostly sounding a bit darker and boxy-er then condensers

When i got nuff channels i mostly use a dynamic (sennheiser/beyer)
i once put 2 condencers in X-Y (10cm) above rack-toms (you have 2 trust the drummer then), give you sort off tom mic and oh @ once.
One condenser (omni) above the rack-toms sometime works as wel

Hope this is usefull

Remco

the problem with condensors is that you really hafta trust the drummer. you dont want to risk having the drummer ruin your mic by accidentally hitting it

Most dynamic mics seem to withstand a beating better than condenser mics... but you don't want a drummer smacking your dynamic mics either.

Dynamic.

I am using MD421's for more than twenty years on toms now and haven't found any better tom mic so far.

And yes, they're full of dents, assholes!
