I'll be retracking most of my electric guitars on the songs for the CD, but unfortunately I'm still raising the money for my new guitar amp so I haven't been able to keep up with Tjarko's work.

You should look into a cheap little amp.....that's how I record all my guitars instead of using my Marshall........you can get some huge recorded sounds out of some cheap little amps.........

The song sounds great.......the acoustic sounds sweet on this one.......particularly the solos........

.......my one complaint would be the cymbals going in the heavy parts......the sound a little muddy.....not as crisp as they could be

man,
im really digging this stuff, i just keep listenin....im still amazed with your guitar sound...and the saxophons remind me of steely dan sax's which is an awesome thing...really good stuff
really damn impressed

Sluice,

About your original concern, the bass sounds fine to me and on my system but it is a bit on the "loud modern side" if that means anything to you. It could probably work well down 1.5db too and not be as borderline boomy as it sounds to me on my system. It's really an artistic decision.

The vocals, seeing as how you asked, were a little out there in spots. Probably a little more compression to tame the spill overs might be in order.

I was also thinking that the mic itself, may not be the best choice for your voice as it sounds almost as if you had to fight it with eq to get it to sit in the mix and a great mic shouldn't need too much "hamburger helper" if everything was ideal going in.

The distorted guitars are clouding the mix a bit too and blotting out the drums and fighting with your vocals for attention. If they were about 1.5db quieter, they would make more space for everything else and maybe even a pad or two to build the thickness of the sound while keeping it more intelligible over all.

The song itself;

What can I say? You are a modern musical genius. You really shouldn't be here but, I am damn glad that you are!:). You should be on your world tour somewhere making millions of dollars and laughing at all us saps trying to be 10% as original as you are.

I think I am going to now jump out the window and hurt myself.

good thing I live on the ground floor!

Cheers! :)

i dont hear any phone at all
just plain old amazing music

EAR CANDY!!!!!!

This sounds so good, you could turn it up, blow out your ear drums, and still be smiling.

You guys just keep getting better, and damn the recording quality, lo-fi sounds like hifi, hifi sounds like ski-hi-fi!!

Don't mean to gush, but gosh!!!!

TripleM- Thank you man. You've hit my dilemna on the head. I hear the attack very well enough in some spots, but not as well in other. What I'm after is a defined attack with a nice warm fat full sustain to follow. I think Pedullist did his share for that, but it's up to me to get it to be realized in the mix. It's got to be in the compressor settings. I'll have to come back to it with clearer ears to really hear it I think. Well said Trip. Thanks.

sloop- Thank you!

Kelley5150- The dude can play!

boydrj- Thanks. I really should compress that fret noise a little. I've just gotten so used to it. I like a little fret noise, but I agree it gets loud here.

Jakearabble- Thank you Jake. I assume you're asking about the acoustic sound. The electric sound kinda sucks. I used a pair of Octava MC012's through a Studio Projects VTB-1. One mic as probably about 12 inches in front of the sound hole. The other was probably about 12 inches in front of the 12th fret aimed at the sound hole. That's usually where I get the most intimate but controlled sound on my cheap acoustic. Also, the acoustic is fingerpicked which adds a nice touch to the tone of the guitar IMO. Glad you're digging the music. You seem very into music and I like that. I listened to your song a little while ago. I left comments. Salut.

Sam- It's the organ. I thought we've been through this already. LOL...It's the second chord of the chorus. There are some high notes that do sound like a phone. I'm probably going to replace it now. LOL Thanks my boy. :)

GT- Wow thanks! This one has had a lot of time to mature. And Pedullist has been giving me the chance to hear some of my songs a little more like a live band. Now if I can just track down a willing drummer. :) Salut.

This song is just so disturbed and beautiful. It ain't the words that are overtly disturbing - it's the way you do it LOL. Puts the hair up the back of me neck. That guitar break moving toward the 5 minute mark makes my eyes moist.

What an incredibly delicious sound you guys got on that bass. You could subtitle this one: 'when collaboration works well'.

FWIW I think you've arrived on this one (of course, that's why my stuff doesn't sound as good as yours LOL). Now, buy the amp. Move on.

"Does anyone else hear a phone ringing @exactly 2:39 and 4:11?"

Yeah, I hear that phone too. It's an agent trying to get through to Tom, but Tom ain't hearing the phone cuz he's in the studio obsessing about the mix LOL.

I just pop by to say: thanks! (still busy as hell, hooray for Microsoft servers! :( Look at my avatar if you wanna know how I feel....)

Gee, apparently the new bass sound is a success. Want me to retrack all bassparts with this particular sound, Tom? LOL :D

Playing Tom's parts is heaven and hell combined. Very challenging, yet frustrating at times. Seems like 'playability' is the last thing on his mind when he programs this stuff. Insane octave jumps, quirky sixteenth note patterns (preferably in unison with his very fluidly played guitar, so timing is very important).. or that sixteenth note ahead of the first beat of the last bar at the ending of Crysalis, when it's already in 11/4. Argh! :D

Love it though, I'm not complaining.

About the attack of the bass....watch the attack (duh) settings of the compressor, Tom. If you set them too low, you'll lose my precious attacks. LOL (you probably know this already, but I tell you anyway)

Yeah man, very nice tone there. Give some details on that bass chain if'n you would. I know its the ped. providing the strings, whats the rest of the chain? ...especially compressor you are using and the settings. Very nice here man.

Fretted Pedulla (Ernie Ball Slinky) > Bass Pod (using SWR SM-400 amp, see settings in pic below) > Behringer UB802 (used as router, no eq or pre-amping used) > Soundblaster Audigy > recorded at 48Khz in Cakewalk Homostudio2004 > converted to mp3 at 192kpbs with Fraunhofer codec.

The Behringer is an essential part of my delicate sound, of course LOL :D

..very infomative post ped, thanks for that. ive never used a bass pod before. Ive messed w/ running bass through a j-station and didnt like the results... I guess i just figured the pod would sound similiar. Im gonna have to take my guit downta guit. center and try the pod out. This is definitely nice.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention 30% chorus effect on the bass too! Probably kind of important. Sorry!

Dobro- Always and inspiration. Thank you. Got your email. We'll talk more later man.

Pedullist- Noted. The compression I've added is only 1.6:1 @ -10dB. The attack of .30 is really only to tame a few transient hits throughout the track and with the high threashold, it really shouldn't affect most of the track, which I've checked soloed.

Here are the EQ settings.

Freq Gain Q
16Hz: -18: 1.9Q
55: 5.3: 7.0
128: 2.2: 5.2
295: -3.5: 11.9
537: 4.1: 7.0
986: 2.6: 7.0
2089: 0.7: 7.0
5993: 3.2: 8.5
8661: -2.0: 7.0
16116: 0.0: 7.0

frprod south- Hey Phil! Thanks for stopping in. Hope things are going well for you. So-so here. Trying to stay level and we're managing. I'll send you an email when I get back on Sunday and see how things are going for you. Or you could just write me one and I'll read it when I get back. :) Have a great weekend, and leave those marlboro's in the store!

Guernica- Hey Mike...I know your last message was to Ped, but I thought I'd say hi anyway. :)

There are some other features that'll make you drool, but let's not make this thread a commercial...PM me if you want more info. :)

O, and btw...the settings are Pod settings. Not sure whether 83 means 83ms or 83 horsepower....

I finally made it through the week! Yay!

I'm on a vacation the next couple of days so I might just respond in advance:

Chris Harris: no, I didn't use autotuner on my bass! Thanks for listening though.

Studioviols: eh, no again...I didn't use a chart for this...sorry ;) Thanks for the extremely long review though! :D

TripleM: a pop? Must be my basstrack, Tom's tracks are usually clean...thanks!

Christiaan: ja, die Pod is fijn hoor!

Freshears: no, YOU rock! Thanks for listening man!

Jake-Owa: yep, it's a gay 5 string. I'm from holland you know? We're all gay... :)

Lt. Bob: you're not drunk again are ya? :)

SLuiCe: one day I'm going to write down an impossible guitarsolo and ask you to play it...mwuahaahahaha :D
