I have a friend that I gave my old drum set to and he just gave it back to me because he can't use it anymore. I'm thinking I might make it my live set for when playing out. The trouble is that it is beat to hell and in bad shape. There's rust all over the hardware and the coverings are in pretty bad shape. The shells are in really good shape as far as playability and sound, so it's not a total loss. I'm thinking of either having the lugs stripped and re-chromed or buying replacements and getting all new stands.

But here's the thing: It's an old Tama Imperialstar kit with the X-tras sizes for the toms, which are the deep 13" and 14". Anyone know of a place I can get new wraps in those sizes?

The drums are 13, 14, 16, 18 and a 22"x16" bass drum.

Tim, you build kits. Any ideas?

Also, anyone know of a safe way of stripping off the old wraps?

Here is the dummy-proof way of wrapping drums, JamminSam. He pre-cuts everything to your measurements, and applies hi-bond tape at the seams.

He gets a bad rap (heh) on drum geek sites, but I have nothing but praise. I rewrapped my tubs with his stuff the day after Christmas '03, took one day. All seams still tight and I always recommend him when this topic comes up, and take the opportunity to show them off.

alot of custom drum companies offer drum refurbishing and i know wrapping is one of the options. Since custom places let you pick your own depth, i have a feeling they would be able to do your toms. The only thing is it will add up to be expensive

a local company in mass. charges this:

Re-wrapping drums, and having to removing old wrap/finish prior.

(Under 16")- $65 labor charge, plus cost of wrap.
(Over 18")- $80 labor charge, plus cost of wrap.

Re-wrap prices:
Solid, sparkle, satin flames, pearl and diamond wraps:

$65 per drum up to 16"
Glitter wraps: $80 per drum up to 16"

Solid, sparkle, satin flames, pearl and diamond wraps: $120 for 16" and over
Glitter wraps: $140 for 16" and over

Maybe you could try staining the shells, if you know someone who is good at wood work they can stip off the wraps, lightly sand the shells, maybe use some wood bleach to bring out the wood grain, lightly sand some more then stain the shells any color you want? then shoot a high glooss poly or whatever you want to make them shine. just a thought!

Tama Imperialstars are a coarse, straight grain Mahogany. It would look horrible.

I wish I could find single thin laminations of good looking wood and glue that onto the outside and inside of the shell and then stain and finish it. It would have to be bonded really tight, though.

I'm liking MidiPunk's suggestion.

You can re-veneer shells but good/nice veneer is not particularly cheap. Doing the inside would really be a waste but if you had money to burn, I guess it could be done.

Veneer is usually 0.6mm thick and for this type of application is usually purchased "paper backed" which helps resist splitting as well as limiting the possibility of the glue bleeding through. The other thing I should mention, is that to do it correctly, veneering shells should be done with a vacuum bag setup.........pic is Rockstar tom shell I veneered a couple of years ago.
