drum sound

well to be honest i have been playing for about six years and only looked at about two tuning guides becouse the didnt teach me anything new so i wouldnt be the best person to direct you but they might be able to helf in the drum section on this board.

can anybody tell me what i need to do with my overheads? that recording is with them about 3 feet about the snare, centered, in coincident X-Y

im lost......

I can't say what to do with just the over-heads...I'm afraid I would have to repeat much of what's already been said...the toms ring!, the bass sounds sliced right into the mix almost too isolated at times...the toms a bit thick/muddy in the mix as well. With all the ringing, they never get to settle down between attacks.

Someone commented on the snare having too much sizzle...I like it snappy like that but (it's just me), there is way too much ping. I've got a snare that sounds like that when you play off center...try playing more in the center of the head to see if that makes a noticable difference. I would track just the snare for experimentation purposes...move the mic...mess with the tuning until you get "the sound"...in fact...I would do the same for the toms. Leave the bass and the OH's alone for now. Once you get these things cleared up a little, take another track with just the OH's... they might be ok where they are.

Sound like a lot but you're just going to have to work with it. Nice solo work BTW.

i can't tell you how much of a help you guys all are. this place is great and i will fervently recommend it if any of my friends express an interest in recording
 
The compression is so heavy that the loud parts are actually quieter than the quiet parts. Maybe it'll sound fine in the mix, but it sounds really really squashed like this.
 
I'm hearing a pretty high noise floor and some crackle, like line noise in the mix when there is someone talking before the first snare hit. You can hear a lot of room, and that might be a problem if you don't like that sound. Some treatment could help you, depending on the space you have.

Other than the noise, some of which could just be the fact that I'm listening to this on a PC through headphones, I think the kit needs a little work. Some gels on some heads, some tuning, some tightening of the snares and perhaps a ring for the snare or some judiciously applied tape to reduce the pingy overtones. I think the mics are pretty accurately reproducing the sound of those drums in that room.

Nice china sound, though.
 
could the low noise floor on the beginning be because the compression is bringing the gain up quite a bit on the very quiet bit? that talking on the beginning is almost completely silent if i take off the compression on the main mix, and the noise seems to go away too.....
