Now that I know I have 3 to 4 tracks avaliable to record with, I was wondering what the general opinion to panning and placement would be.

My main idea is to have two room/overhead mics. This leaves one extra mic... We'll probably use the 4th channel as a DI for the band to play on as a scratch track and then we'll just build from there.

Any ideas on the placement and later panning of the tracks?

Thanks

Take 1 mic and put it in the kick, take 2 mics in an x/y config and put them as high as you can over the kit, centered on the snare. on mixdown pan the kick center and the other 2 hard left and right.

I think I have the answer to my own question.

Tell me if this sounds good.

2 overhead mics, left and right.
+1 mic in bass drum
----
3 mics/channels

Overhead mics panned hard left and right respectively, and bass drum in the center.

if the kik is overbearing take it out of the equation and use a kik trigger pedal . you can build one for a few bucks diy using a flat pezo transducer that costs 25c. then the trigger pedal can trigger kik samples in a drum brain.
just an idea.

Farview, I had no idea you even posted that! It was nearly the same thing I thought of after skimming a few topics...

Though I am curious... what is this X/Y thing people keep mentioning?

I was just ribbing you, You were typing the same time I was.

x/y mic'ing is when you place the mics next to each other (capsules almost touching) at about a 110 degree angle to each other. This method creates a stereo image with a strong center. A spaced pair setup will give you a wider stereo image but not as good of a center. Seeing as how you don't have a snare mic, you would want to use the x/y.

Hint: You don't have to have the mics directly in fron of the kit, I place mine pointing at the snare but off to the ride side so I get the stereo image of the toms going right to left. ( it's hard to describe, let me know if I didn't make it clear)
