Drum Overheads

I built my studio in my basement. As is with basements in old homes the ceiling is pretty low. So after putting up a drop ceiling I'm left with a ceiling height of a little under 7'. Does it make sense to have overhead mics on my drums? There's probably about 2' or less between the mics and the cymbals.

Why not. I had a ceiling that was 8 ft tall. I just put eyebolts into the ceiling studs and ran the mic cord through the eye. That was my mic stand for overheads. Lol.

Got great results with a pair of old Teac pencil condensers. I did however, take all the drywall off the ceiling and just had exposed beams. That made a huge difference in reflections

I'd say go for it. And EXPERIMENT. Once you really learn your room, I'd be willing to bet the results will suprise you. (In a good way)

the ceiling above my drum set is a little under 7' (6.5' to be exact) I record drums with 2 over heads, a mic on the kick, and a mix on the snare.

although I'm not a good drummer....I think I am getting Great sounds out of the over heads

Short answer is yes. I don't think you need to have your overheads all that high though if you are worried about reflections from the ceiling. My L OH is about 44 inches above my snare.
