Hey. Sometime I'm going to be buying two mics for overheads for my drum set. I've been looking around, and the MXL 2006's look pretty good. http://www.music123.com/MXL-MXL-2006-i144706.music Do you have any other suggestions for mics that are great for overheads for drums and are only $99 each? If there are any mics better than these for the same price, I'd want to go with them. Thanks!

I've had good luck with a pair of Nady CM-90 mics for overheads. Of course, I have separate mics for the toms/snare (5x AKG D2300S), and kick (D112), so the OHs have plenty of support. I don't think I'd choose the Nadys if I didn't have the support of those other mics, although with different placement, I might be happier with them by themselves, hard to say.

I'd definitely give the (Russian) MK-012s a shot if I had a second one. Seems like it would be a decent overhead mic.

My biggest piece of advice would have to be to avoid the Nady DM-90 (kick mic). It's not horrible, but it's worth the extra money for an AKG D112 (or the Shure equivalent, if you're into that sort of thing :D ).

The Oktava MK-012 is a fine mic for O/H. after doing the "Scott Dorsey" mods, they are great mics for O/H
where can you buy them? im having problems finding them other than ebay. also i've heard there are a lot of fakes, so im definitely not going to buy them on ebay. someone else said you could get them $100 apiece. now that doesn't seem possible.

A while back when I got mine they were 2 for $100.00 at Guitar Center

+1 for the MXL603's. I think you can still get a matched set with shockmounts in a nice case for 200 ish on ebay. If you're a DIY type, there's a very simple capacitor upgrade that'll smooth out the high end on these already decent sounding mics.

Alright, I'm finally back! I'm probably going to make a seperate thread for this matter, but here it goes:

Which would be better: 2 MXL 604's for $200 or 2 MXL 603's and 2 MXL 2001's for $200. Even with the advantage of both cardioid and omni pattern options with the 604's, I could use the 2 "bonus" 2001's for micing toms.

Just a thought. I'll probably make another thread like I said, but right now I'm kind of leaning towards the 603/2001 combo since it basically comes w/ 2 free 2001's.

AS of today, I think one of the best deals available is a B-stock matched pair of Joe Meek JM27 SDC, with stereo bar and mic clips, for $100 (this includes shipping) directly from PMI Audio. They come with a full warranty too.

a matched pair for $100? what are these mics worth brand new? and what exactly would b-stock be and how would it affect the mics?

i bought my jm27's from ebay for around $90 new. I have'nt used them as overheads yet so I can't recommend them for that.

so is a JM27 better or worse than a 603 (both generally speaking and used as an overhead)?

ppl think my mxl 993s sound really good

180 for a pair

do it isay

do you have any clips of them being used?

if anyone has any clips of their suggested mic(s) being used in drum overhead application, that'd be great!

What can I expect quality-wise out of the b-stock JM27's? Do you know what they'll come with, etc? Will there be any problems?...

I think I might go with them any way, b/c A) it's a matched pair and B) it's $100.

I did a comparison between a few mics here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=205961

I've promised to do a couple of other comparisons too but I have'nt found the right time to get it done yet. There's a few things that I would have done different in that first comparison and I don't feel that it portrays the best representation of each mics sound. It should help you out a bit though.

I've been using the 603's with good results.
I picked up a second matched pair on eBay for $75. Good deal.

So would a stereo pair of JM27's or 603's be better?

they're both cheap mics. if you have to ask, go the cheaper route.
