i find this interesting as well.
what exactly is "better" about them?

the only thing i can imagine is that a) they're omni, so you get more room sound, if your room is good, and b) they're brighter in the high end.

am i right?

I frequently prefer omnis for overheads. The inherent accuracy of omnis is helpful. The room sound is an issue, but not as much as you might think. The big problem with omnis is that you can not use them live, which I find to be a problem. What I really like omnis for, though, is as room mics.

geekgurl,
the room is a small rectangular soundproofed local studio. the ceiling is low, there are two glass windows paralel to each other, and carpet on some surfaces, even though the rest is all wood. doesn't sound good at all on paper, but we did get a good sound for my band's album there. we were not going for big drum sounds though, our music is kind of light.

bleyrad,
the 8000s sound clearer and more natural to me, which i suppose means they are flatter curve than the 603. i placed them pretty close to the cymbals, since i didn't want a lot of room sound. i used a c3 in omni mode for the room sound which i could add in as much as i wanted. the 603s sound better on my acoustic guitar though.
