Hey all, I have only one track capability, with 3 mics, for my next drum recording session. I was wondering if you smart people could help me out with placement and stuff.

i think i'd rather have two overheads and one bass drum mic, but either way would work. depends on what your going for i suppose.

Both of the replies given are right. It just depends on the type of music you are recording.

If your doing a rock track, mic kick, snare and one over head. Because you'll want the close mic energy and tonne on the snare.

If your doing jazz, or something more acoustic, use two overheads for a good stereo tone, and blend of the whole kit. And one kick mic for the low end.

But experiment with combinations and placement. And have fun

I use this and couldn't be more happy with it. :D

I only have one track too. What I do is mix the 3 mics on my board and run a line out of the board into the input of the 8 track recorder. That way all 3 mics are being recording on just one track.

It work GREAT!!!! The only downside is that you can only turn all 3 mics up at one time on the 8 track. You can't just put a little more bass drum in or whatever.

So to put more kick in the mix, you have to adjust the levels on the mixer and then re-record.

It can be a little bit of a headache, but I love using this technique. :D

If you check out my mp3's, don't let them scare you off. I didn't use this technique on them, and this technique sound's about 10 times better than what I was doing.

Good luck. :)
