Hi,
Im trying to achieve a classic 60's drum sound (mainly west coast pyschedelic/pop stuff like Beach Boys, Love, The Doors, Moby Grape etc.) and have been experimenting with a couple of set-ups in different studios. The latest being a simple 1 overhead (Neuman U47) and a bass drum mic (AKG D12 i think). The U47 sounds good, nice fat live sounding snare when placed about 4-5 foot directly above it. Trouble is of course, you lose at lot of the outside of the kit especially cymbals and i like to hear the cymbals being bright and aggressive (the doors 'light my fire' for instance).
Next studio we try has these mics to choose from:
Neumann U67
Neumann U87 x 2
Neumann KM184 x 2
Coles 3048 Ribbon Mics x 2
SE Electronics SE 3's x 2
AKG C12VR
Electrovoice RE20
Senheiser MD421 x 4
AKG D12
AKG 414 x 3
AKG D112 x 2
AKG 451 x 3
Shure SM57 x 3
Shure SM58 x 2
Tandy PZMs x 4
I'm thinking of trying the U67 over the snare plus an overhead either side (Coles maybe?) to pick up the outside of the kit, is this a good idea???
Basically the final drum mix should be near enough mono, very bright fat snare sound, aggresive 'fizzing' cymbals with a lovely 'thud' sounding kick.
Any suggestions for mic usage and placement?? We are going for a classic 'live room' sound so not really into close micing anything, just simple 2, 3 or 4 mic set-up.
Thanks
YDR.
