Im looking for a package of drum mics. I tried out the Shure package with the sm57;s and 52, I recorded with them and I thought they were decent, they picked up lots of ring but for sound quality it was good. I was concidering a Audix Package dp-5. There are a lot of drum mics on ebay going for 200 dollars. I even found a package with 7 drum mics for less than 200 dollars. What should I go with?

the "ring" is due to the way your drums are tuned. i bet if you tune them up and damper the heads a bit you'll be happy with the 57s and 52.

You'll also get more ring when the mics are close and pointed towards the outer edge of the heads. Get your drums tuned first so they sound how you want them to recorded (this includes the room), then play with mic placement. A set of isolation headphones is nice to have for placement work. 57's can always do a fine job on toms and snare.

If you're still having trouble getting the sound you want, do some serious studying on drum acoustics and tuning. That will help you make the most out of any mic.

Good Luck!
