hmm, that's an interesting idea. I'll keep it in mind. Especially the idea of muffling the resonance heads. I'll also have to look at the fibreskins. Thanks for the suggestion!:D

Rimshot,

Have you used the Renaissance heads? Remo also claims that they are like calf skin. I was just wondering how they compare to the Fiberskyns.

No, I haven't tried the Renaissance heads yet, I'll have to. I'm pretty well stocked up on Fibreskin 3's, Ambassador coateds and Pinstripes, but I'm always looking for more options. I recently switched to Evans EMAD external dampening head for my kick batter and I'm loving it. I've taken the pillow out of my kick and I get the right tone with all the resonance of the shell. A sound engineer thought he could hear a slight vibration from the dampening ring but it didn't translate to the recording. This is a real good option that I strongly reccommend.

BTW you will lose a bit if volume with the Fibreskins but you gain a really nice, warm, fat sound.

What do you guys think of evans hydraulics? Thats what I have on my live kit now, are they good to record with?

Thats actually interesting that you bring hydraulics up. I've always felt that they were waaaay to dead sounding - great for live but for recording delivers that "cardboard box" sound.

However, I was lurking on the Evans forum at their website a while back and there were A LOT of guys singing the praises of the all-new, redesigned hydraulics. So apparently, they are better than they used to be but I would still be wary of any two-ply head with oil between the plys. :)
