Hi People,

some of you may remember this tune I posted a few weeks/months ago. It's recently had a face-lift and thanks to Lt. Bob some very very cool sax parts have been added.

I had an absolute ball mixing this last night. The sax parts have given this song some real class that take this song to the next level, but without making it unrecognisable.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have

My nowheresite is a little rearranged now

www.nowhereradio.com/dres

go to "Discography" (not Biography)
then "Collaborations"

the song is "more + sax"

as always comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated

Hey man this sounds great. Sounds like a live club recording! I'm not a very good critic so I don't have much to offer...
I myself have done a couple collabs with Steve so I'm not suprised at how good this whole thing is. Nice job mixing him in!

Nice song...great sounding vocals...and very rich crisp guitars and percussion.

Nice job!

Thanks SLuiCe.... I'm still pritty pumped about this one. What get's me is Steve's generosity. This is his living... if he was a car salesman this would be the equivalent of giving me a car ! I can't speak highly enough about him at the moment. I reckon this has become a totally classy song with much wider appeal than it did before. Rock on... now I'm gonna check your thread :)

Dude stop right there....he might try to collect retro from me...

 You didn't realize you guys owe me?

Shoot, one of the best things in my life has been this site and the collabs I've gotten to do. It's not like I don't play all the time but this is special.
I thank both of ya'll for allowing me to play on your tunes. I know they're important to you and I appreciate you letting me butt in.

And yes, it is for free, HOWEVER ,....When my wife and I retire and get our RV; I'm spending a week a year with all of you. :D

Dres,
Nice job man!!! Good room sound on the sax. It fits the song well. I like the vocs too. What are you using for drums.... they sound especially nice. I like the snare sound.... very fitting. Actually all of the percussion is really nice. The only suggestion i could offer is maybe a slight mid cut in the lead vocals. They are the slightest bit harsh..... Im nit pickin though.

Stevie.....Nice work as usual. Youre like a musical machine man....:)

Nice work dres, a great tune!!!!

Lt. Bob : No worries your welcome to visit anytime... bit of a hike to get to the other side of the planet though ! .. your RV better have wings. Maybe, just maybe I'll get to meet you guys if I ever go to the US. By the way is this your first *international* collaboration ?

Guernica: Thanks for the complements... it's funny you should mention the vocals, I actually did some eq work on them last night so they could compete with the sax... maybe I went too far.

Effect on sax are a combination of Delay (My old Promix 01 onboard effect, just a simple centre right left delay with different settings) and a reverb from my Lexicon MPX-500. I found I could really heap on the reverb without much effect on the sax clarity so I really pushed it.

Drums: well nothings changed... just my Roland TD-8 electric kit (played not programed) ... same effects as above in different quantities. Majorly compressed in Cubase (3.7r2) though... I use their softsaturation thingy a lot ... seem to get better results than the compressor.

The only thing that bugs me is I think I can hear little digital blips every now and then... can anyone else hear them ? I think it's clipping... not sure. And on relistening today I think my panning is a bit screwy... I think I've ended up with too much stuff on one side... anyone notice ?

Congradulations by the way on actually managing to post anything on this super slow website... can't wait for this upgrade !

Yes you know....I hadn't thought about it but I believe this is my first international collab.......coool!
You need to fly in for Jamfest next year.

I was quite happy with the sound dres got on my horns. Horns are really different than any other instrument. Actually, the thing I'd compare them to most is drums because of the large dynamic swings. And we all know how hard it is to get the drums right.
I like FX on the sax and he's right. Sax'll take a lot of FX before it starts to suffer. So I felt dres did a good job of mixing in the horns.

Yeah, I forgot you're in Australia. I'll need a 747RV :D

Yep I noticed this a lot. Actually it makes for a very easy mix since the juicy parts tend to pop out all by themselves .. no need to ride the faders. The exact opposite of this is of course distorted electric guitar... by virtue of the fact that it is distorted there is practically no dynamic range. The percieved volume of the sax also varies considerably with pitch which doesn't happen as much with other instruments except perhaps the human voice.. which is the other "instrument" I compare the sax to.

Well I've listened to this song about 15 times today and I still like it. Any poor sucker walking in the door is forced to have a listen :D I think even my father-in-law will like this one !

I like this tune as you already know from your previous version you posted.Steve took it to another level.Very tasteful horn licks there LT Bob.

I think you did an excellent job of blending the sax into the recording.. sounds like the same studio.

I'm medium on the song, so I won't go there.. but I can appreciate good playing and performances..

Yeah I listened to this a while back dres, sounded good then and really great now. Head's up job on the performance and mix...and that sax player (who is that guy?) hehe, man that guy is unreal. Great job dres and Lt.

I kind of fluked it I think .... you have to get lucky eventually ;)

Truth is it's not really my style either. It always amazes me how different what I play is compared to what I listen to... you'd think they coincide more. Adding sax has definately made me "think outside the square"

I'd recognize that sax anywhere! great job Steve!

nice collab fellas.. I liked the part @2:00 a lot too..

I agree about the vocal needing something e'q wise..

Hey Dres,
.....just wondering ....did you boost the high mids on the vocs to make them stick out in front of the sax? If so, you might want to try scooping out the guilty overlapping freqs. from the vocs instead and see how that sounds. ..just a thought. I know what you mean about the dynamics of horns, it takes some getting used to.
Great stuff man!!!

:)

tune was real punchy. yall did really well on that collab' .

Cool...just bring the horn. :D

Nice job on this one, btw.

I'll have to look... I honestly can't remember now.... I know I added some low mids to warm it up a bit. The sax sounds very warm and my voice suddenly sounded thin in comparison the way it was before.

I've discovered what some of the little clicks that have been driving me nuts are.... I have a passive bass and when all fingers are off there's a slight humm/buzz... putting your finger on the strings earths the instrument and silences the buzz, but also makes a small click on contact and this is what I'm hearing occasionally... the most obvious one occurs at about 0:02 and I think there are about 6 in the song..... Any ideas on how to edit these out ?
