DP-24 - I love it (so far)

No reason why it shouldn't! If you NEVER plan to record more instruments you might look at a nice Tascam TSR-8 or something different. If you do decide to expand later, the DP24 should do the trick even then. The price is insanely affordible for anyone in the recording game. Hell, even a half-assed girlfriend ought to be able to pony up for one! (hehe)...

24-tracks is awesome and the DP-24 sounds like a great unit, but...

for simple singer/songwriter stuff requiring fewer than 24 tracks and recording no more than 2 inputs at a time I might consider a DP-008 or DP-03, digital 8-track Portastudios.

The DP-24 comes in handy for big productions requiring many tracks and tracking more than 2 inputs simultaneously, like a live ensemble.

On the other hand, for the reasonable price of a DP-24, it will give you many features and production capability you can grow into over the years. You may scope it now for simple singer/songwriter stuff, but who says in a few years you might not want to track a band performance? The DP-24 gives you a lot without being horrendously expensive.

I'm not sure I'd steer a clueless newbie (no-offense) toward analog unless it's a premium analog Tascam Portastudio, such as the 424mkIII, which is a self contained unit. It's simply too much to jump right into TSR-8's and the like from scratch, IMO, and expensive too!

:spank::eek:;)

Well thank you for the advice! If i were to go with something simpler such as the dp-03 would it still include all the things i would need to get the sound i want(i.e. reverb, compression, ect.), cause whatever I get I would like it to have all I would need right there...with the exception of a few effect pedals and stuff...i just want things to be as simple as possible so it doesnt get in the way of the creative process or the "human element" of the music. Thanks again! :)

Hey steve...
please help.
I finally figured out thanks to you how to get reverb on my vocals...
but alongside reverb is a horrible scratchy radio sound....
what happened to my clear mic??? what am i doing wrong???
so many thank you's in advance....

Sorry for the delay in response.......without hearing it is is really hard to say. What setting is it on? Type of reverb ?

Not even sure what a scratchy radio sound means......

Hello everyone and greetings from Scotland.
Im new to this forum and i came here looking for some help with my new DP-24.
I cannot get the metronome to sound at all. I can hear my recorded tracks ok but the metronome stays silent.
In metronome settings ive tried both REC and REC & PLAY, Level at 127 max, Tempo 120, Time sig 4/4, Bar display ON.
Ive updated the DP-24, That went well and its now up-to-date. I thought this might solve the metronome problem but i cant hear a thing.
Does anybody have any ideas? Could this be a fault with my DP-24 or have i overlooked something extremely obvious?
Please help!
Thank you.

OK problem solved, The metronome isnt output through the rca stereo output, only the monitor output, oops!

re. Tascam DP 24 low level reverb fault

Hi everyone, (great forum website!)

re. Tascam DP 24 low level reverb Fault

has anyone else found this low level reverb Fault - on their Tascam DP 24? (I have spoken / sent email to Tascam UK to fwd to Tascam US Service for comment / help?)

re. low level tail of reverb still audible (v. quietly, but audible) after main reverb has died away in the usual way

eg :-

I record myself singing for a few seconds

I play this track back and add say 2secs hall reverb, and listen back on headphones

the reverb tail dies out in usual way at end, but I can still hear it (reverb) at v low level (say -50dB?) still looping / audible low level in background?? = Fault.

reverb loop (v low level) lasts for ever, but still audible ~ I can prove it's the reverb, as when you go into the reverb screen, and switch reverb OFF = the fault immediately stops in the headphones and all goes silent (apart from the usual v slight backgorund electronic hiss) (turn headphones / levels up when replaying / listening and you will clearly hear fault ~ but it is certainly audible in background at normal listening levels as well)

this is a brand new Tascam DP24, and it is using the v.1.02 software ~ will have to return this unit under Warranty, if cannot be fixed?

any thoughts / advice from the group please?

with many thanks,

So signed up to ask this question, might have a chance of getting one of these units cheap... but like many others have before i am wondering on it's functionality as a control surface for a DAW on a PC or MAC, and how does one go about hooking it up to control said DAW since the usb is only out?

I use FL Studio, Pro Tools etc... and just like to learn various programs but i am looking for a nice mixer station cheaper than say a mackie control or something of that sort.

Thanks in advance!

It's with the song.....when you load it, it loads with it......The Master will play everytime you hit mixdown and then MASTER.....keep in mind though if you (like my first) do a project in 24 bit 48 HZ and Master It you CANNOT burn it to CD.....16 bit will show up as a MASTER FILE when you hit CD and then WRITE....

You can Master at 24 bit and still play it the same way....when you hook the DP24 to a computer you can and play see your MASTER at 24 bit.......

The Master always play with the song in MASTER mode regardless of 24 bit or 16 bit.....

Just got a DP-24, and ran into the same brick wall....the song I'm working on is comprised of tracks we originally did on the 2488 Mk I at 24 bit, which I then imported onto the DP-24 today. Sounds incredible, but I also can't burn a CD. What seems contrary to me though, is that in the manual (on page 73), it states that if you use the Noise Shaper function, the master file data is automatically converted to 16 bit. I did use the Noise Shaper function, so my master file data should now be 16 bit....yet, I get the "Master File Not Found" error when I try to write it to a CD. I have submitted the question to Tascam support....will wait to see what they have to say.

How do I make the used memory capacity of song GO DOWN??? I have the latest firmware, I used "TRACK CUT" to eleminate unwanted audio, the utilize "Song" menu and "DELETE UNUSED"audio. Still no positive result. As a matter of fact it actually INCREASES used memeoryt capacity on the SD Card. I need help DESPERATELY!

Couple questions from a new DP-24 owner

Couple questions for you pros, being an owner of this DP-24 for a couple days now (and yes, I'm new to home recording). I know that I bought more of a machine than I needed but the price was good and I fell in love with all the cool knobs...

#1) From reading this forum, is "monitor" the same as "stereo RCA jacks coming out the back"? I have headphones, as well as speakers hooked up to the RCA jacks. When recording, I put on headphones and have to unplug the RCA jacks or else the sound comes through the speakers. Then, to listen on the speakers, I plug back in the RCA jacks. From reading the forum, it seems there is no way to turn off the "monitor" while recording but is that what I'm doing in my setup?

#2) I plug my SM-58 mic into the XLR jack in back (straight in with the mic cable), and have to turn the trim up, all the way to the right, crank the master/stereo fader all the way up, and crank that channel fader almost all the way up to get some sensitivity in that microphone. I've tried the other inputs too, assign them to different channels, they all work the same way. It seems like it needs more power or something (phantom is off btw, the SM-58 doesn't use it as you know). Does it sound like I'm doing something wrong? Should I be doing something different?

Thank you!

Matt, I've only had mine for a few weeks now, but I'll take a swing at your questions...

1.) I have a set of powered monitors connected to the Monitor Out jacks in the back, which I control with the volume knob...the stereo RCA outs are connected to a four channel headphone amp in my rack. In this way, I can roll off the volume to the monitors so they're not picked up by any microphones, and still have a good feed into the headphones from the headphone amp. This eliminates the need for frequent connect/disconnects at the rear panel.

2.) We do our vocals through a condenser mike, which goes into an ART tube preamp, then a dbx compressor into the board, however I use a SM-57 on a Marshall Class 5 amp for guitar tracks direct into the board...as I recall, I do have the trim set pretty high (although not all the way), and that gives me plenty of signal at whichever channel strip I assign the input to, with my Master faders sitting at about -6. You are correct in that dynamic mikes, like your SM-58, don't require phantom power, so I'm not sure why you're encountering the issue...if you have another XLR cable handy, I'd try swapping them just to rule out a cable problem.

Hope this helps!

Hello party people. Well I hemmed and hawed 'bout stand-alone vs DAW. After reading a lot of what y'all had to say, I realized I really dislike excessive cables/cords/wiring & dealing with latency, driver issues etc.
And the other big issue is, I do think that computer recording has a tendency to kill sudden inspirado. And when the muse calls, you must be in the moment before she leaves your ass high and dry...

So I finally pulled the trigger on one of these bad boys while on offer from Musician's Friend's Stupid Deal. I'm primarily going to be doing basic Post Punk/Indie/Brit Pop inspired lo-fi stuff with the emphasis on the late 70's-80's sound. I'll be incorporating electric & acoustic guitars, drums, vox, piano, synths, & percussion.
Bare with me as my only real experience with stand-alone gear are old 4 track cassette recorders. My questions are:

1.Are the on board preamps quiet enough? If not, I'm wondering if you can bypass them with 3rd party equip. [The most important thing for me here is the lowest noise floor on a budget.]
2. I have phones, a condenser, a couple tube pres, and a pop filter. Being a neophyte, and taking into consideration what the DP-24 is equipped with, what other types of gear in general would you folks recommend I look into?
3. My 1st project is digitizing my old 4 track tapes. I have a Tascam 424 I've never used previously & I need to know how to dump 4 tracks at once since the only outs are 2 RCA's, headphones, & 1 effects send. (Not quite sure where to post the 3rd question BTW.)

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. Cheers!

While I don't know the NEO, I am at a loss why someone would feel the need to upgrade to a DP 24.....it's my understanding that the NEO is a great machine....However, they are of the same lineage or rather design....you gain some things, you lose some things with every new generation (just like life)

These machines are a means to an end.....period

The latest and greatest is not the magic ELIXER.......You are

Certainly each machine is perfectly capable of giving you stellar results....I would be perfectly content with either...

The only reason I got the DP 24 over the NEO Price was within $150....But the deal clincher is that a Color Screen is mandatory for my eyesight....The screen is absolutely magnificent.....I guess the SD cards make it less volatile than a drive...

Bottom line....If your NEO works, keep it......if it's broken down or on it's last legs and you love this medium, purchase the DP24....

It all comes down to workflow.....After 4 weeks with my DP24 I got my workflow down.....(BTW....I LOVE that you only have to hit record)....

Neo owners you got your workflow down, so stay there.....Besides a true upgrade would be a product that leaves your old gear way behind....

BTW I just purchased a USED Korg Triton Extreme.....I know the board and knowledge of your instruments is more important than the latest and greatest gear.....

For NEO owners I would keep your multitrack and spend the upgrade money ($699) on a great microphone, or whatever your current studio needs.....

I'm loving this DP24 just like you love your NEO......Great Gear

OK which sounds better ?

EQ set to flat

Everytime I do save on a song the EQ on all channels are set to flat! Very annoying. I think this came witch the new software version 1.10. I just bought the thing so I haven't used it that much yet so I'm not sure!

Emailed Tascam about this but no answer yet!

Other than that I´m quite pleased so far!

EQ Flat

Same here with the EQ settings

Did Tascam say anything yet?

Gtrz...Ron...

is it worth getting the new one compared to the Neno ? im looking at the HD24XR as an up grade...

No no answer yet! Maybe some more people should mail them so they come out with a quick bugfix!

Wondering maybe I should try and reload the old version. But the fix to be able to burn CD:s from 24bit is quite nice to have working!

The previous firmware had some freeze up issues...so going back isn't a tempting possibility...a quick fix, new firmware update, would be nice...I hope they do so. I have send them an e-mail...Ron

Words of Wisdom?

Hello, all-
I just got a Tascam DP-24 and wondered if anyone would be kind enough to share some experience and expertise to help me get started with some basics.
I've seen some posts regarding using the built-in effects processing on the DP-24 and they were useful but I guess I'm somewhat confused by some of the basic operations and even some of the terminology. For example, I can get one of the effects to work on the inputs (while recording) but don't know if I can use 2 effects at once (there's 2 effects controls on the "Mixer" screen). Also, even with all faders down, I can hear the reverb effect on already recorded tracks whenever the "effects send" control is turned up (??).
One of my basic questions is what do the effects send controls actually do (or control)? It has taken a couple of sessions just to figure out how to apply the effects signal to the input or playback tracks. The manual seems to assume I know some of these features without explaining some basics.
Any hints, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
-Cris
