there are a LOT of useful things that digital provides and I say this as a long time (45 years of having a home studio) analog guy that still does most of his stuff in the analog realm.

I still think you gave damn good advice. If you are going to record someone playing their instrument, try to get the best performance to record
 
Playing music together with other musicians is very rewarding and great fun certainly more fun than practicing on your own.
