I recently bought the event ps6's. On the back of them, they have a volume adjustment. (-20db to max, which is probably +15 or so.) I have a darla soundcard with software volume adjustments. In the Darla manual, it says to keep the volume as high as possible to maintain maximum bit depth on playback. In order for me to keep decent volume level, I have to comprimise and have the darla volume about a 1/4 and the volume on the events about 1/2.

My question is..Will the volume on the back of the speaker effect the speakers response? I mean like not having the full bass potential that it could have or anythign like that? Also..Is my Darla manual lying to me and I really don't need the volume to be jacked in order to keep my music as clean as possible?

I tried adjusting them slightly, but really can't hear a difference..but wanted to get other opinions...

Thanks..

Stop!

I would just leave them how they are, you migth not be able to get them back to where they where originally, if they're like the event 20/20 bas they are shipped with the perfect volume level, but once moved all you ca do is eyeball it back. If it's as loud as you want it, I think that's fine, if you actually need to turn them up becasue you can't get them loud enuff otherwise then mayby do it.

for every 6 decibels of attenuation before the d-a , you lose one bit of information, so I would keep the level at the highest in the software and adjust only the volume on the speakers. I dont think it will affect high freq info. I am sure the amps work just like regular amps.

Thanks guys..

When i got them, they were turned up all the way. I think I'll leave them all the way down and have the software turned up then..

Brokenwindow,
This won't solve your problems either, IMO. An amp should be operating between 50% to 85% of its range to have the same linearity as its listed specs.

Aren't the outputs of the Darla soundcard going back to your mixer? If not they should. This way you can have the monitors opened up to ~75%, the soundcard opened up to full (up to zero). THEN, you can use the levels on the mixer to adjust the final volume. My mixer has a CR (Control Room) level so I can have everything running at an optimal level and use the CR level to adjust the final volume. If you don't have a mixer, you really should have one to do the job right.

This may be true for some amps, but I'm sure it's not a general rule. It all depends on how the amp was designed. In any case, whether you attenuate the signal at the monitor inputs or with a mixer, you're not going to be driving the amps any harder. The amps are directly coupled to the speakers. For the volume to go down, the amplifier power output must go down.

Volume levels are always a compromise. If you cut the volume at the monitors instead of the soundcard you are basically replacing a digital bit resolution problem with and analog signal-to-noise ratio problem. Still, this is probably the right way to go.

Thanks Rev E, barefoot...

I have the monitors hooked directly up to my 1st and 2nd output of my Darla. I have a Behringer 8 channel, but want to keep it out of the audio chain as much as possible..:p

Right now, I'm using the ps6's for everything... recording/ mixing/ gaming/ listening to music/general computer use.

What i think I'm gonna do is use my old speakers for everything except recording/mixing....at that time..I can hook the ps6's up to my mixer and control the volume from there.

Another question..How much difference would there be between balanced cables and unbalanced for the monitors..Right now I'm running 2, 3 foot 500 series monster cable(unbalanced)..

Thanks again.

does the darla have selectability between +4 and -10 outs?

WHen I have my ouputs on +4, I can hardly crack the gain on the amp. Switching to -10 fixes the problem.

I have it on -10 already.

I talked to a guy at Event and he said it doesn't matter where the dial is. It doesn't effect the frequency response of the monitors. He said it was more of a voltage regulator thingy ...i dunno..

I really can't hear a difference when the monitors are down..just quieter. I'm gonna leave the darla volume cranked..

Thanks for the replies..
