You know what they say, when everybody seems to have a problem, maybe the problem is you.

I'm a newbie, and the people here have been very welcoming to me, and with my whopping 600 bucks worth of gear they have been more then happy to help me with all my questions, and I've become a better home recorder then I was before.

Now that I know what my components are doing, I can wisely upgrade as I can afford it, and everyone here is still happy to give me thier opinion, moving from a Beheringer to a Mackie, no one is telling me its Amek or nothing.

Anyways, I'm just glad you typed your last post like someone that understands English, it was giving me a headache.

A few things. I think this post was directly targeted at me. I live in suburbia, right on a golf course. I have money, well I don't but my peoples do. I get loans, and lots of them because I only work in the summer, so I pay it back then. Anyway, FL, I'll take your side with that, it's def. underrated, and I find that I'm a great FL user. I can make anything from classical music to dance, the program just works great...except for some of the clicks when you play a piece back in FL. Now with the equipment...I used a 10 track Behringer mixer and some cheap audio technica mics, I pluged the stereo out into my line in and recorded, ok quality but not great, then I got the lexicon and sometimes put my mixer into that, the quality is VERY noticable! I don't understand why people have some equipment, but to each his own. I'd say ignore what some people say on here or anywhere, try the stuff out that interests you and if you like it use it, if you don't don't. If you have some personal vendetta against what a few people told you, then just don't listen. I think we are all adults here and can just say "Well, you might know what you're talking about, but we could possibly have differences of oppinions as far as "what sounds good?"

I'm done, I just feel better now.

ultimately it's your ears that decide, man. I don't see why people are so afraid to trust thier ears combined with a little kindergarden know-how on electronics.

Agreed,but if mans ears never heard a good sounding preamp,man is blind to the fact that there is something more that needs to be done to the sound.

I thought my mixes were ok,but when i got the preamp,i started thinking that my mixer are ok get it?

I have owned every peice of junk recording mic, preamp (insert any gear under $500 here) and created some real peices of art. I have also spent a ton on high end gear in recent years. I have to say I enjoy making music on the high end gear much more than the low end gear. The reason is that is it is more efficient and quality results come quicker.

I don't hold the gear responsible for the ultimate outcome however, it's a means to an end. I do like making efficient use of my time though.

My best work is always more centered around proper arranging and clean performances. Great results are primarily the work that goes into the creating and performance and lesser the gear.

I can relate, man. And you know what? I'm still really enjoying the ride. And some good folks here have thrown me a lifeline more than once along the way.

And, Gecko, kudos for your excellent summary of some thoughts buried in the slings here.

Yes, high end gear usually equals great results much quicker. BUT, not having it isn't an excuse for not having good recordings either!

With a good song and a good performer, junky gear all of a sudden becomes far less of an issue in the outcome!

There are some key thoughts I found winding through this thread.

They are:

1 High end equipment doesn't guarantee high end results. Talent and skill are required.

2 Low end equipment doesn't guarantee low end results. A skilled guitarist friend was able to wring the most amazing sounds out of a crappy, untuneable guitar I had laying around. Gifted people are able to work around the limitations of their equipment.

3 In the end, it is the results that count, not the process nor the tools used to get those results. Let the ear be the judge.

4 The choice of tools is dependent on budget available, level of sophistication of the user and desired quality. It is not easy to juggle these three, and we need to know their relative importance before recommending something or criticising a choice.

5 Generalised statements (favourable or otherwise) of particular products are an expression of personal preference and opinion, and carry no more weight than that. All products have their virtues and vices. Whether these matter or not needs to be considered in the context of intended use and other factors affecting choice.

6 Finally (and possibly repetitively), musicality is a function of the brain, not of the equipment.

It seems some of the offended posters know these things are true and are mad at themselves for spending thousands of $$$ on useless gear and have
yet deciphered a technique to record a fairly decent mix whereas I get heavy
rotation with my fl homestudio tracks on our local clearchannel station
with no payola. ps (and i got groupy hoes & hood fame)

(And I was referring to recording rap, where gear quality isn't usually a factor
thats why i used the laffy taffy reference to show that garbage track & garbage song could still get you #1 spot on the charts)

the only tool you need in this business is good ears. If you can't tell the difference in sound quality from a soundblaster to an apogee, a behringer monitor to an Adams, a radioshack mic to a neuman....THEN you're in the wrong hobby/pastime/proffesion
