It's the only place I've lived where your mother has more chest hair than your daddy and she thinks "Guns and Roses" is something you get for you anniversary. Shoot our neighbor's mom was on her third marriage, still had the same inlaws and two of her boys were named Billy Bob!:)

LMAO!

But I bet the Billy's played some mean banjo....

"...shit for brains..."???????.....very funny, very mature, very professional...I gotta hand it to ya, Blue Bear--for someone who makes hit records with the ease of dressing himself one pant-leg at a time you're certainly on top of the game...if you had any "common-sense" at all you'd shut the fuck up entirely lest we model ourselves after you and cut into the tremendous profits you profess to be "earning" each time you pull your pants up...one question though--if you create a hit record each time you pull up your drawers, exactly what the fuck is your complaint again???????????...I'm obviously very confused, perhaps even psychotic, cause I always thought musicians and song-writers made "hit-records"...maybe I should shut the fuck up and just try to bask in your warm glow--if only I knew where to stand whenever you decide to dress yourself. :o :o :o :o

ummm......The one pant leg at a time was a SNL skit...

If someone gave you an apple that was not theirs to give, then yes it would be theft.
...hmmm, and what if someone simply placed an apple on the lunch table, along with a note that said--"enjoy"???????????...what then?

Must throw my 2 cents into the bag

and that bag is getting phreakin filled!

Am I the only one that thinks $49.99 for a PC game is a bargain?

I have a a friend who cant afford anything because he has no job but he has every free program/movie/music he can fill his harddrive with. His basic stance is because he isnt taking it off the shelf...hes not stealing it...its just a copy of a copy...well that has been debated through out this thread.

I hate my generation if all they think is that its okay to steal it if they can't afford it...They need some strong parenting.

I swear if everyone would just get caught doing it...there would be no more piracy.

The main reason i don't Pirate/steal is because I did get caught...well our company.

I worked for a computer repair company for about 8 years...it was a small mom&pop operation.

During the windows 95-98 years...It was common for us to install full copies of windows onto customers computers who didnt have a copy of it themselves...and we didnt charge them for it.

Microsoft must have spent a spy out to every retail store because a few years later. we were named in that Microsoft piracy lawsuite...and we had to pay...BIG!

It Almost closed us down.
It was scarry knowing that the big *Faceless corporation* was staring us right in the face.
It put stuff into perspective...eventually companys will find a way to track and prosecute people who do not pay.

If you all think your anonymous on the internet...think again...all congress has to do is lower the privacy bar one notch and it'll be a sh*t storm!

This is for Mr. Pseudo Philosopher :

What is theft?

I think I covered all my thoughts...oh yeah....I did pirate that Paris hilton video....lol...I cant resist boobs!

The thing is, I don't get to go down to my nearest Lexus dealer and tell him, "I only make $20,000 a year and am going to use this car just for fun, so I should get it at 1/3 what everyone else does.
...so, the Lexus dealer tells you to piss-off--which you promptly do cuz you've got your "morals"...then, on your way back to the bat-cave you drag your lethargic $20k/yr ass into your local used car lot and purchase a tricked-out 65' LeMans (with a bored-out 389cu/inch motor, semi-high rise intake manifold with three Holley two-barrells, headers, glass-packs, posi-track rear-end, mag-wheels, a little doggie in the back window with his head bobbing up and down) for exactly 1/3 the cost of a new Lexus...of course, you won't get any of that north-side pussy with your GTO look-alike, but you soon find out that the pussy on the south-side tastes just as sweet  ...what's your point??????????????...my point--much of what our "civilized" society has to offer, both legally and illegally, is available on a "sliding-scale"--based entirely on one's income...go figure  ...it may also interest you to know that automobile insurance is considerably less (up to 1/3 less) for people who don't work and therefore use the vehicle "just for fun"--as you have said...hmmmm, go figure  ...of course, all of this has little or nothing to do with the treacherous behavior of those who would "eat cake" at the expense of those who sign the pay-checks for a select few who earn a living making fanciful strings of zeros and ones :o :o :o :o--hint, hint...

I love that. In fact, I have that on my desktop and it's the first thing I play for people before we start a session.

This is almost ammusing now. There are now 10 pages of posts with people trying to defend software piracy. The real issue is not whether it's a copy of a copy, or not being taken from the shelf. The real issue here is that it is theft. No matter how you want to dress it up, or justify it. I don't care if automobile insurance is on a sliding scale. The difference there is that the INSURANCE companies decided to offer THEIR OWN service at a discounted rate to certain people. In the software piracy issue the people stealing the software are making a decision that they have no right to make.

Toy, I don't think you actually made a point in that last post. Who cares which I buy, a Lexus or your Lemans. The thing is, in either case, IT WAS PAID FOR THROUGH PROPER CHANNELS. Software manufacturers make different levels of their own software. Versions of Cubase cost anywhere between $99 and $599. ANYONE can go out and buy one of those. I don't care how poor they are. If they could afford the computer, the soundcard, the mics, the instruments to record, and the time to do it, then they can afford the software too. No if's and's or but's about it. If not, spend a few hours working instead of downloading and earn the money to get it. If you need SX instead of SE, then get off your lazy ass and earn it. I really wish I could afford to go out and buy vintage 1081, or a GML channel strip, or a Fairchild 660. However, I can't. I don't go steal it eiother though. Instead, I either work harder and save up, or make do with what I already have.

Now, if someone placed a stolen apple on my table with a note that said "enjoy"..... Thats quite a bit different then software piracy. I don't wake up in the morning with a cracked copy of Nuendo on my desktop. If I have one, then that means I sought it out which also means I knew it was wrong, yet made the decision anyways. As far as the apple goes, lets assume that I knew that the apple with the note was stolen. Then I have some decisions to make. The right thing to do is return the apple. The wrong thing to do is eat it. Plain as that.

The bottom line is that I live in America. Here in America I have the right to be as rich or as poor as I want and am capable of. What that means is that I may wish I were as rich as some other people, they actually have the right to be that rich, whether I like it or not. I also run a pro audio company. I show up to shows with a lot of hard earned expensive gear. So lets say I have a local opener that thinks that "people owe them something" because they think that they have worked harder than others who are currently having more success. Now lets say that they see my mic case and I have 12 sm58's in there. Does that give them the right to take one because I have 12 of em? Hell no! What they don't understand is that after labor, taxes, gas, truck insurance etc... that the value of that sm58 might just be my profit margin for the night. Even things that seem stupid like cabling cost a lot. I hate competing on bids against "Joe Schmo" with his little PA that tells the promoter that he has the same stuff and can do it as well. What many people don't understand is exactly what goes into doing a "pro" level show and how much we have to invest in our gear to keep it that way. When I show up to a show I have as much money in just my cabling and AC (if not more money) than a lot of these bands have in their little PA. I have no problems with this, but call it what it is. This is how I see software piracy. Its not my right to assume that these guys are making enough money so I can just take what I need. If they are making that much money, then great:) At least someone is succesfull at what they do. Plus, all this new software is super cool, so I am really happy for them:)

...xstatic--you make a lot of sense, bro...so does Blue Bear, Dogfish, Chriss, Bass Master "K", Cyrokk, Anteares, boingoman, NYMorningstar, Neil, Makaveli, mrx, and most everyone else...at the end of the day I guess we just have to take the good with the bad--especially seeing as how the long arm of the law rarely stretches out to places like Olongapo City, Kinville, Osan, etc...cheers to the HR.com admin for letting us go on and on.

Now you're funny too!

In response to criticism of those who would feel it morally acceptable to download or share free software or music, approximately 19 of 20 of our dedicated musicians make little or no money with music and are actually be pretty thrilled to be honored by someone caring enough about their music that they would download it. Most of us feel we have something to say musically and the money is not the driving factor.

If you can't see that to be a mitigating factor in moral judgement, then by all means keep your hard earned software and music for yourself. I can see your view too; if you had to suffer, why shouldn't others. It's a VERY old story!

Me too - few (intentionally) freebie mp3's, wasn't impressed - I paid for all software on all my machines, not once but every upgrade for 2 to 4 full versions. Goes for Samplitude, Cake, Sonar, Sound Forge, Midi Quest, and a couple others.

Speaking of hypocrites, how many of you thieves out there would bitch to high heaven if someone illegally downloaded (or uploaded) YOUR hard-earned album for free, therefore depriving you of income you earned? It's ALL just "software", whether it's music or programming - get a fucking brain, or at least some MORALS - be unique in your neighborhood... Steve

Don't apologize, mino. This guy is just another lame apologist with a cute font and "oh, kind sir, why do you trammel on us, poor humble people who do nothing but share for the love of music? Why, why sir? If you cut me, do I not bleed? :( "

Whatever. Sharing what is yours is fine. Sharing what belongs to someone else isn't. This is yet another person who doesn't get that fact.

Why wouldn't it be acceptable if it's free? Duh
The argument here is about piracy. That would be downloading software or music when it isn't free.
Is it morally acceptable? I think not.

I'm not sure where you get your statistic, but apparently am 1 out of the 20 musicians who makes a living playing, teaching, and to a lesser degree, recording music. I don't appreciate you painting a picture where musicians are "thrilled" at being ripped off. If you don't care about making a living doing music, then offer up everything you have for free. Personally, every band CD or solo project I have done, I (or we) have offered up two to four songs on mp3's that can be downloaded for free to generate interest. If a person likes it, then hopefully they will buy it. I am never "thrilled" at seeing people copy CD's or download music or software that is not being offered for free. It is hurting the very people that this person is so jazzed about hearing (or using the program).

And this is what kills me: Most artists (and programmers) offer up free samples to generate interest in their products. But no, that is not good enough, people steal it instead. In stores you have listening stations where you can hear just about every track of a CD so you know what your getting. Nope, still not good enough, people steal it instead. Cubase offers everything from free demo's to stripped down versions for real cheap to the full product you can score a film with. Nope, none of those options sound good to people....they are entitled to get, not something, but everything for nothing since they have little fear of getting caught.

It all comes back to this: A thief is a thief is a thief. Stealing is stealing. And if everyone behaved like the above people, there would not be Cubase, nor would their be a lot of the great artists you enjoy listening to today for the whole system would go bankrupt and collapse.

You want to give all your music out for free, then be my guest. But don't think for one second that a working musician appreciates you offering THEIR music out for free.
