And I'm bored so I thought I'd completely waste my time commenting on this mess.


I'm an in-house software developer (among other things) for a large company. I am also a musician, and a songwriter, and I do recordings (for myself and other people). So I have every angle of the "intellectual property rights" thing covered.

Quite honestly, I could do a better job than most of you in arguing both sides of this issue... and I could give you all the anecdotal, one-sided "evidence" that I would need to make my argument sound credible.

I could go on aboot how bloated and monopolistic software companies are, and how over-priced their software is... or how illegally copied CDs don't have any direct impact on their revenue (since it isn't reducing their physical inventory).

I could go on aboat how much the little guy and the legal users suffer from piracy, or how much prices are jacked up because of it.

Hell... I could argue with myself by stating how much it costs companies per year just to attempt to make their software difficult to steal... while at the same time mentioning that an entire industry was created because of piracy that employs thousands of people and puts food on the table of many families.


I could do all that... but it wouldn't really make a difference, simply because... NONE OF THAT MATTERS!!!!


It wouldn't matter if Bill Gates was a snarly troll who spit on homeless people and jacked up his profits just so he could spend more money on hookers.

It wouldn't matter if I was a poor college kid who really wanted to be a programmer/recording engineer/whatever, but I was physically incapable of affording software that only costs 100 bucks.

I don't care what your situation is... I don't care what your scenario is.... I don't care what your opinion is... It..... doesn't..... matter.


The reality of the situation is.... if you don't pay for it, then you DON'T DESERVE TO HAVE IT... you freeloading, unscrupulous, sociatal parasite.


If I bust my arse (and empty my bank account) to put together a great live show with my local band, and you don't feel like paying to see it, then you don't deserve to. It doesn't matter that it's not hurting me when you sneak your sorry @ss in to the back seats while I'm up there playing. You have no right to be there. There is no need for trumped up justifications or condemnations. I don't have to have a reason that you deem "good enough" for you to agree to this premise. If you don't pay, you don't play. That's how the world works. I don't even have to waste my time getting into the fact that it's illegal... simple common sense will suffice in this instance.


We're not talking about food here... we're not talking about shelter or clothing. We're not talking about a starving man who steals a loaf of bread to feed his family.... we're talking about SOFTWARE. Disposable income purchases, that every single person walking this planet can absolutely and undeniably live WITHOUT!

There are so many things in life that I would be better off if I had. I'd name them, but it would take too long. But it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that I'd like to have them, or that it'd be really good for me if I had them, or that it would greatly improve my quality of living if I had them. If I can't afford to pay for it, then I have no right to take it. Plain.... and.... simple.

Sorry Chuckie but I must disagree.
So far there have been over 10,000 views on this thread by people that both agree and disagree with H.
Most people with common sense won't get involved if they agree, so we get to read the ones that take a strong stand against H.
I think we need to make it clear how we feel about piracy.

If we ignore the problem it will only continue to escalate until it's completely out of control. I’m sure there is no moderator in the world that would want to police a board that is completely trashed.

So if we all started illegally trading software here, how long do you think it would take for lawyers to shut the site down completely?

I'm sure we could go as far as block certain IP address from ever posting here again but I think we all have more to learn.

I own and operate the studio of my dreams.... my daily life consists of doing exactly what I love doing (audio engineering), and earning a great living doing it.... I have some amazing friends and colleagues... and I get to work with some very talented clients.....

Why does s/w theft have any link to my ability to compose? I thought we were past the whole pirating thing, I'm a lost cause. Let ME clue you in on my point. You guys thought I couldn't make music. I have shown otherwise. My case is therefore at rest. I know no one here could give a rats ass if I was dying of cancer, let alone if I had any talent. But at least you know that I do, whether you see it as a talent for creative compostion or as a talent for pissing people off. You're probably just jealous that my thread has shaken the very foundations of this board and that everyone here knows my name and not yours.

'The Truth In Verse'


‘I am a poet’ were the first words to leave his lips upon his entry into the tavern. Eyes exchanged knowing glances at each other, waiting for what was about to happen next.
The poet smiled. He had achieved the effect he desired. He walked slowly over to a dark corner of the room, where he could sit and with his back safely to the wall and gaze upon those who wore the tainted essence of man. The villagers, relieved at the poet’s lack of a wish to quarrel continued with their boisterous jestering, but always with one wary eye on the tall skinny man sitting in the dark corner amusing himself with his quill. They all knew it was useless to defy him, for after all, who hasn’t heard the expression that the pen is mightier than the sword?
A little girl, taken aback by this human trauma had watched how everyone around her had transformed from her heroes and role models into fake puppets on faker strings in the presence of the tall skinny man, who was sat silently on his own in the dark corner of the room bearing nothing but truth in verse. Despite her mother’s pleas, the little girl ran up to the poet, and kissed him gently on the cheek. Startled by this inhuman display of unselfish affection, he turned his head slowly, and smiled. He smiled until his cheeks ached and the tears streamed down his face. ‘Little angel of mercy’, said the poet, ‘I thank thee. I have not felt the grace and warmth of such passion for too many years. You have given me hope. You have inspired me to write about all that is beautiful.’
The villagers let out a huge cheer. They rejoiced in the knowledge that no more harsh words were to leave the poet’s quill, words that they feared to be so true as to cut into the depths of their very hearts. The tall skinny man then arose from his seat, and walked towards the door, until the little girl blocked his path. She looked up to him and shouted, ‘Poet! Speak a verse of poetry! I am owed that at the least!’ Everyone stared up in horror, knowing far too well the fate that lay ahead them.
Out into the world this particular poem was born. It was the most beautiful poem ever spoken. It spoke words and syllables so honest and true, that they shone through the villagers’ souls, dissolving them and absorbing them in the burning judgement of all that is fair and good, leaving their human parts behind as a testimony to acquired innocence.
She clasped his hand, and together with their purity they walked out of the tavern towards the better life that lay ahead of them.

Truly I hope that some day you do write something decent. Then I hope some little punk ass steals it and makes a lot of money off of it. How about your precious drug money then?

The bottom line is that you are right about one thing only. That is the fact that whether or not you steal the software has no bearing on how talented you might or might not be.

It doesn't change the fact though that talented or not, in my eyes you will always be a piece of trash who I would never knowingly let into my studio or onto one of my stages. Sure the law may never catch you. Thats too bad, if they did you could finally have something good come out of this. I believe that everyone out there has something to contribute and I can learn something from each and every person out there. It's just too bad that what I have to learn from you is what not to do instead of some useful new trick or tip.
