This whole subject is so black and white (morally, theft IS theft regardless of the amount -- legal distinction based on 'value' is another issue), yet grey at the same time. One thing's for sure, it's not going to change any time soon. Realistically, it's going to happen, and at a minimum I personally do consider it inappropriate to ask how to crack software on a public forum, then be indifferent when someone denounce

A 'grey' question: If I buy a used computer from someone that is already loaded with all kinds of software, whether copied or cracked, am I a thief -- only if I use it???

I already know some will say yes, others no. Still others will say, uninstall all the un-paid for software, then install the bought versions. I'm sure many critics here of the software theft practice have bought used 'loaded' computers and not uninstalled/installed. Let's face it, we're all hypocrites to some degree.

I have never bought a used computer first of all. If I did however, I think that using the software is just fine, so long as the person I bought it from is not still using the same software (without purchasing a new copy). I do see how that is a bit more of a grey question though. I think as and end user we all have the responsibility to do what is right. That may mean paying for the software, it may mean deleting it, but in the end we have to do what we deem morally correct, and that depends a lot (at least to me) on what the original owner does. If someone sells me a computer with the software still on it, but continues to use that software on their own computer, than I actually see them as the one "stealing" the software at that point. That is how it becomes kind of fuzzy as to what is right and wrong to me. However, for someone to seek out, download, and illegally use software, that is most definately wrong. They knowingly and actively commited that crime. If the software came with the used computer and you crack it because you didn't have the dongle, than that is definately wrong to me.

As far as schools being underfunded in other countries..... That still doesn't give someone the right to steal software. If that truly is the problem (which it isn't), than either take that issue up with your government, or move. Instead of stealing software and spending hours using it, spend a couple weeks weeks of that time working for some extra money so you can afford it.

Exchange rates between the US dollar and British pound have changed over the last year. Consoles that I were looking at in England have gone up considerably in price for me, but have not changed for those in the UK who wish to buy them. Its not something I am happy about, but its the way it is. I just accept it and deal with it rather than complaing about it and insisting that I shouldn't have to pay the increase.

This thread would have been great when I was forced to write a paper in college about Socialism (I'm opposed...).

It would have saved me time, and allowed me to use MY LEGALLY PURCHASED MUSIC SOFTWARE more often.....
if you thought this usefull, then i think you have a really big misconception of socialism... not that i am one myself though, but now i've seen weird remarks like this a few times and i think you need to do some actual studying, people...

whats legal

Firstly, for those of you saying that there is no grey area. If you were to buy a computer then you have no right to any of the software on it, legally payed for by the previous owner or not. It is illegal to resell software that you own , whether you use it afterwards or not.

2ndly as cham already mentioned correctly, it is illegal to record friends from your tv... Yes , it is illegal to record pretty much anything from your tv onto your VCR , and always has been ... yet since its a generally accepted thing, it is now deemed morally ok?

Not in North America, it ISN'T........ "personal use" allows one to record TV/Radio/Streaming broadcasts quite legally.... it's if the person tries to sell it for personal gain it becomes an issue.

You've already been told this..... why repeat yourself....... like banging your head against a brick wall..........

So buying a second hand software CD from someone is fine but being given a copy by a friend is the same as stealing a Ferrari?

I'm glad I don't live in this black and white world you guys do otherwise I'd have to turn myself in to the police for owning videos taped off the TV, for smoking pot, for not paying for the Windows disk that came with my PC, for being given second hand software and not sending a cheque directly to the software developers, for having MP3s on my computer...

I don't advocate theft but in some cases "theft" isn't really the right word. If someone gave me an apple would that be theft? Would you want me to pay the grocer for the apple even though it's already been paid for once?

well now

I'm not one of these people who are all up themselves saying I never pirate software, download illegal music etc etc....

Hell , I do all of the bad things a bit... I won't try and justify it .. only saying that I will pay for things that I like and use for an extended period...

Just wanted to inform the people who thought they were perfect that they can't legally buy 2nd hand software. tis good to wind em up a bit too

Along with your taping things off TV for personal use statement being incorrect, this statement is also incorrect. You have done nothing but repeated incorrect information that was already covered earlier in this thread. You CAN by used software. The original owner CAN NOT keep a copy and keep using the program.

There's no need to try to wind the people in the right up, it's the people doing the stealing who are getting upset here. I know I do the right thing so there is nothing for me to be upset about.

i really cant belive this descussion is taking place - ITS ILLEAGAL so there for immoral and a bad thing to do so DONT DO IT! its that simple

If someone gave you an apple that was not theirs to give, then yes it would be theft.
When you install a program you have to agree to and end user license agreement. If you follow those rules, then all is good. If not, then you have broken a contract and should be (actually you are) liable for it whether it be legally, civilly (?), or monetarily.

What the fuck is a Dongle anyway?

I am the computer genius

Do you have a little blue device plugged into a port on the back of your computer?

Being homosexual was illegal for a long time.

Just because something is breaking the law doesn't make it immoral. Imagine a starving kid in the third world. He has the opportunity to steal a loaf of bread to eat. He breaks the law but doesn't starve to death. If he was prosecuted that would be immoral.

While I don't believe software piracy is right, I don't think you can make a direct correlation between what the law says is "right" and what actually is right. It's illigal to smoke marijuana, so is smoking marijuana immoral? Nay I say. :)
Sorry, just saw that and had to reply. Back to the topic.

Way bad analogy. Comparing something like luxury software to a basic human necessity like food or an issue like someone's sexual preference?

That wasn't my point. My point was law doesn't define morality.
Laws are based on morals. The more you talk the more clueless you appear. Smoke a couple more joints and keep the entertainment coming. :D

There is a law in Arkansas that states a man can beat his wife in Little Rock provided he does it with a stick no bigger than 3 inches across and not more than once a month.

So a pool cue would be OK then? Arkansas here I come:D

I agree that laws don't define morality. On the other hand, I also don't want to hear any drivel from anyone who thinks that stealing software is moral. If thats the case, that tells me something about that person and discredits everything else that comes out of their mouth. Why should I trust the morals of someone who can't even uphold such a basic tenament?

I agree that it is really bad taste to compare a starved child stealing food to survive with a lazy bastard who thinks the world owes them something so they have the right to take what they think should be theirs even though it's clearly and plainly unnecessary, wrong, and illegal.

I do fully and completely aggree that "law does not define morality". I guess the problem is that too many people take that to mean "law is immoral" and therefore "unlawfullness is moral". I guess those people would somewhat be classified as anarchists then? For all those that are...... just remember that the same "Law system" that you might hate also protects you from other people. Without "Law" there would be nothing to stop me from abusing you.

You might wanna reconsider that. If ya only had a cue stick on ya, Betty Joe an Sue Ellen would woop the shit outta ya!

It's the only place I've lived where your mother has more chest hair than your daddy and she thinks "Guns and Roses" is something you get for you anniversary. Shoot our neighbor's mom was on her third marriage, still had the same inlaws and two of her boys were named Billy Bob!:)
