Ok, this sounds like a good idea, but I need you guys to lemme know if it'll work..... We are recording our band's demo now and here's what I plan to do.... 4 tracks of drums (Fostex 380s with Dolby S Cassette )- 2 tracks overhead mics, one track snare, last track kick) all mixed down to 2 tracks on the Fostex R8(dolby nr 1/4" reel to reel) then the rest of the intrumentation will be done on the Fostex R8. I want to do this because it'll give me more flexability in the drum mix for the finally stereo mix + the 4 cassette tracks combined will be wider than those of the R8's 2 stereo tracks( right?) Anyway if this will work, will I have any problems going from one machine with dolby s to another with dolby nr? I know the final demo will only have dolby nr but I'm fine with that. I just need to know if I'll have any problems later down the line.... Thanks

p.s..........OR I could use the Sansui MR-6 (6 track cassette with dolby nr) for drums then mix them to the R8. This way I'm doing dolby nr to dolby nr and maybe no problems (?)

Why not overheads on 2 tracks of the R8 and kick and snare each on their own track of the R8... Then bounce those to two tracks of the R8. The R8 is still the higher format regardless of NR type.

Or are you already out of tracks on the R8?

Otherwise it doesn't matter what kind of NR you have on different machines, because the machines decode it on the way out to whatever else you're bouncing to.

I totally understand what you're saying... No, I'm not out of tracks on the R8 (because we haven't even started recording on it yet. I used the sansui mr-6 tonight for drums only and was very pleased with the results.) Here's the thing... I kinda wanted a seperate (physical hard copy) tape with drum tracks ONLY so if I didn't like the (drum) mix later, I wouldn't be stuck with THAT mix. I'd always be able to go back and remix.:) I know the drums would still be on the r8's different tracks anyway (If I had done it the way you suggested ,which does make more sense really) but none the less, I was very, very pleased with the results. It's amazing (when you're a drummer) how having most of your kit on seperate tracks is just soooo cool!!! Here I am playing with cassette and 1/4" tape and I'm REALLY excited about the sound. Some of you guys are light years ahead of me in terms of "quality" (with your thicker tape formats) but I'll get there....I promise.....with tonight's results and just knowing how much better thicker tape really is, I'll never give up on getting better gear and a better sound! :D But for now (with my finances, Ha ;)) what I have will have to do!. :) Thanks for the help Beck!
